Agenda Problem Statement Where We Left Off Design Changes Final Design Final Subsystems Prototype Setup/Take Down Questions

Problem Statement Design and fabricate a wearable device that can support the use of a laptop while walking, standing, or sitting. Marketable to industry and to the general public. Researchers, Claims Adjuster, Surveyors, Inventory Takers, Engineers, Field Operators, Students, and on the go professionals.

Problem Statement Customer needs and constraints Sturdy and secure Lightweight/portable Easy set up Universal fit to user Even distribution of weight Ergonomics Cost

Where We Left Off Telescoping arms that fold down from backpack. Mesh platform for resting laptop rolls out from arm. Adjustment for width of user.

Where We Left Off – Design Concerns Perception of stability/strength of mesh platform. Security of the laptop when walking. Will it be comfortable and ergonomic to use. Ability to support heavy loads. Platform interfering with disk drives, USB drives, etc.

Design Changes – Addressing Concerns Stronger arms using more bracing in backpack. Rigid flat table that locked onto beam arms. Velcro to secure laptop.

Design Changes – Addressing Concerns Tubular arms extend out using push button locking hinges. Folding table slides on arms. Secures using concentric tubes and spring lock. Velcro on table to secure laptop

Final Design – Mobile Laptop Desk Tubular Aluminum frame in backpack. Plastic back support to help maintain rigidity and distribute load. Fixed Width Table section snaps on to arms.

Final Design – Frame Subsystem 7/8 Inch Aluminum tube with 1/16 inch wall thickness. Metal Joints connect tubes Frame and plastic back support distribute weight of load.

Final Design – Frame Subsystem Provides a rigid frame and allows attachment of a belt to keep bag from pushing away from the user. User’s laptop and hands distributes 40 lb load on the user’s back.

Final Design – Arm Subsystem Same Aluminum tubing used in frame. Arms weight about 1 lb each. Push button locking joints are the key to extending the arms and adjustability.

Final Design – Arm Subsystem The arms were designed with a 2.5 safety factor against yielding for a load of 25 lbs per arm. With 25 lbs load on each arm the tube deflected about ½ inch.

Final Design – Table Subsystem Injected molded plastic table that clips onto the arms and locks into place. Two halves would hinge together. Velcro on laptop and table secures system while in use.
