Scientific Notation SWBAT write the scientific notation for numbers given in standard form; write the standard form for numbers given in scientific notation; compare and order numbers in scientific notation

Scientific Notation  What happens to a number when you multiply it by 10? The decimal moves to the right  What happens to a number when you divide by 10? The decimal moves to the left

Scientific Notation  Scientific notation A number written as the product of two numbers  The first number must be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10  1 ≤ x < 10  The second number is written as a power of 10

Examples  2.5 x 10 -3  7.83 x 10 0  2.925 x 10 -2  4.04 x 10 -9  7.1 x 10 -4  6 x 10 7  0.0025  6400  -54,200,000  0.0000909  6,100,000  -0.0000329

Class work  WB page 13, 1-16  Turn in when complete

Adding/Subtracting Numbers in Scientific Notation  Adjust the numbers so the power of ten is the same  Add or subtract the decimal factor  Keep the power of 10  If the decimal is greater than 10 or less than 1, re-write your answer in scientific notation

Examples  6.9 X 10 -6 + 5 X 10 -6  9.2 X 10 8 + 6.4 X 10 8 – 2 X 10 8  6.3 X 10 8 – 1.512 X 10 7  5.81 X 10 6 + 4.22 X 10 7

Class work  Worksheet Problem 1, a-f  Homework Worksheet
