1. PURPOSE To give a brief report on the status of water supply at wards 24, 25, 26, 27 and 34 villages within the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality under Mopani District Municipality in Limpopo Province 3

2. BACKGROUND The five wards falls under Ritavi II/Tours/Thabina Regional Water Scheme which is a scheme above R100 million getting their water supply from 3 water treatment works with a total design capacity of 40Ml/day and currently producing an average of 38,2Ml/day and 108 boreholes. 4

5. STATUS OF BULK WATER SUPPLY 5.1. The status of the Nkowa Nkowa Water Treatment Works is as follows: The design capacity of the plant is 24 Ml/d The plant is operated by Lepelle Northern Water Board The plant abstracts raw water from the Groot Letaba River The plant pumps purified water to the main 2 x 20 Mega litre reservoirs situated at Dan Village. The plant supplies a total of 24 reservoirs with a total capacity of 54, 3 Megaliters 8

The plant supplies 21 villages which are: Bonn, Mafarana, Sedan, Ntsako, Co- Op, Dan, Khujwani North, Lefara, Mhangweni, Mariveni, Muhlava Head Kraal, Muhlava Cross, Mulati, Nkowankowa Town, Petanenge, Rita, Zangoma, Sasekani, Sasekani North West, Mogolobotho and Dan Low Cost housing units 5. STATUS OF BULK WATER SUPPLY (Cont)

THE STATUS OF THE NKOWA NKOWA WATER TREATMENT (Cont.) However bulk water no longer reaches the reservoirs of the majority of the villages because of lack of water conservation and demand management as well as uncontrolled unauthorized connections on the bulk pipelines. The total population figures for all villages supplied is 122 890 Plant water production with l/c/d for the past 6 months The figures above indicate that there is enough water for the communities within the area of supply MonthApril 2015May 2015 June 2015July 2015 August 2015 Septembe r 2015 Production in Ml/month 644680612633632 618 l/c/d175185166172 168 10

5. STATUS OF BULK WATER SUPPLY (cont.) 5.2. The status of the Tours Water Treatment Works is as follows: The design capacity of the plant is 4 Ml/d The plant abstracts raw water from the Tours Dam. The plant supplies a total of 25 reservoirs with a total capacity of 8, 7 Megaliters The plant supplies 16 villages which are: Bordeaux, Hoveni, Maselapata, Mashilwane, Matawa, Mogapeng, New Nyanyukani, New Phepheng, Pharare, Rhulani, Sebela, Shiluvane, Solani, Makhubidung, Myakayaka and Sunnyside. The total population figures for all villages supplied is 43 961 11

5. STATUS OF BULK WATER SUPPLY (Cont.) 5.3. The status of the Thabina Water Treatment Works is as follows: The design capacity of the plant is 12 Ml/d The plant abstracts raw water from the Thabina Dam The plant supplies a total of 27 reservoirs with a total capacity of 11,6Megaliters The plant supplies 17 villages which are: Craighead, Galidekela, Khujwane South, Lenyenye Town, Lephephane, Long Valley, Maake, Marumafase, Matlala, Mogoboya, Moime, New Co Op, Ramalema, Serare, Thabina Valley, Uplands, and Yosmite. 16 7. STATUS OF WATER PROJECT 7.1. Tours Bulk Water Scheme which entails the upgrading of the plant Scope of work: Upgrading of Tours water treatment works, the project will benefit the following villages : Bordeaux, Hoveni, Maselapata, Mashilwane, Matawa, Mogapeng, New Nyanyukani, New Phepheng, Pharare, Rhulani, Sebela, Shiluvane, Solani, Makhubidung, Myakayaka and Sunnyside 16

STATUS OF WATER PROJECT(Cont.) 7.2. Other project in Tours is the bulk line and reticulation to the villages within Tours supply area. Scope of work: Scope of work Upgrading of Tours bulk line The technical Report at assessment stage. 17

STATUS OF WATER PROJECT (Cont.) 7.3. Lephepane Bulk Water Scheme is under implementation but MDM has submitted another technical report for the same scope (with some additional scope). DWS is busy working on the new submission Scope of work Refurbishment of reservoir, boreholes, bulk lines and construction of new bulk lines, repair and replace existing valves construction of booster pump station in Lenyenye. Progress  Construction is at 16%  Financial is 17 % 18

8. OTHER INTERVENTIONS 10 boreholes have been repaired under Accelerated Water Services Program (AWSP) 17 boreholes have been repaired under Municipal Water Infrastructure grant (MWIG) A committee has been established between DWS, COGHsTA to speed up the assessments of technical reports including the Specialised Engineers from National Office Mopani DM has cpommenced with removal of unauthoraised/illegal connections (Mohlava Village) with intention to further rollout to other wards 19

9. CHALLENGES Bulk water supply: Ageing infra structure, vandalism of infra- structure, unauthorized connections( some are leaking) on the bulk supply pipelines, unauthorized reticulation pipelines, theft and vandalism of stand pipes, rising number of car wash informal businesses which are illegally connected to the supply system all contribute to the un-sustainability of bulk water in the supply area Reticulation pipelines: The reticulation pipelines are not adequate in all villages. The villages have grown and the reticulation systems no longer cover 100 % of the villages Low dam levels Late completion of MIG projects Non compliance of technical reports Most of the boreholes repaired under MWIG and AWCP are vandalised 20

CHALLENGES (CONT) Reticulation pipelines: The reticulation pipelines are not adequate in all villages. The villages have grown and the reticulation systems no longer cover 100 % of the villages Low dam levels Late completion of MIG projects Non-compliance of technical reports Most of the boreholes repaired under MWIG and AWCP are vandalised 21

10. RECOMMENDATIONS In the light of the above information, it is recommended that: Funding be sourced for the replacement of Ageing infrastructure Implementation of by-laws to curb up illegal connections. Awareness be intensified on impact coursed by Vandalism and Theft of pumping equipments. Implementation of water restrictions due low dam levels. 22
