2. Session Objectives Know the aims and objectives of this unit, Understand what you are expected to do during the unit, Understand how you are expected to work when producing all of your Applied A-Level ICT work.

3. What I Will Learn You will learn about: How the increased availability of electronic information has affected people and business; Public-service websites; Search engines; Databases Use of spreadsheet facilities; Development of spreadsheets to present results; Presentation of the results of an investigation.

4. Unit Overview This unit is assessed by producing a portfolio of coursework. You will be using a range of information sources to solve a problem. You have a choice of two different problems / investigations to tackle – choose wisely!!! Task B carries marks for SSPG so take care when writing your essay. The work on this unit will be completed by April 2010. The unit is marked out of 50… Grade boundaries are currently not known for any of the units although will be round about 24 for E and 44 for A.

5. What I Will Produce……. A report describing how the availability of electronic information effects people and businesses; Evidence of using a range of search engines to find appropriate information, a comparison of the results found and conclusion which search engine is the best for the given task; Evidence that websites have been used to locate appropriate information by using menus, hyperlinks and internal search facilities; Evidence that a range of operators have been used to locate appropriate information from both local and online databases;

6. A spreadsheet which analyses further some of the information which you have found. Appropriate spreadsheet facilities will be used including macros to assist with the entry / processes or output of data; A presentation which demonstrates the findings of the investigation made up of a range of information types from a range of different sources. A detailed bibliography will be included; A critical evaluation which assess the methods used to find and present the information. Comments on your own performance throughout the unit will also be expected.

7. Standard Ways of Working.. Many organisations have rules and guidelines to help people work effectively and avoid problems. These are known as ‘standard ways of working’. They are very important for people working with ICT. There are many reasons for having standard ways of working in ICT. The most important is that information in ICT systems can be easily lost or misused. Standard ways of working help you to overcome these problems. In your work with ICT, you need to ensure that you: Manage your work effectively; Keep information secure; Work safely.

8. Session Task Download and read the unit specification from my website, On one side of A4 summarise some of the key techniques you will be required to learn so you can successfully find information for your investigation.
