3 Tonsillectomy Example: The tonsillectomy was once common to reduce the number of colds a child suffers, but today doctors are not as anxious to remove a patient’s tonsils if it can be avoided. Definition: Surgical removal of the tonsils

4 Phlebotomy Example: In former times, phlebotomy was used indiscriminately as treatment for practically all illnesses; early doctors thought that by getting rid of some of a patient’s blood, the “bad spirits” that inhabited it would be removed and the patient’s health would improve. Definition: Opening a vein to diminish the blood supply

5 Anatomy Example: You will learn about the structure of the skeleton, muscles, the heart, and the other parts of the body when you study human anatomy. Definition: The structure of an organism or organ; dissection of the plants, animals, or other things to study their structure; analysis

7 Tomography Example: Because of the use of tomography, the doctors were able to locate the ruptured artery and go to surgery to try and fix it. This process was successful because doctors could isolate the problem area and ignore the rest. Definition: Special x-ray technique to show images of a selected plane of tissue by blurring out other planes.

8 Appendectomy Example: After complaining of stomach pain for three days, Kamika was finally admitted to the hospital and received an emergency appendectomy. Definition: the excision of the appendix

9 Trichotomy Example: Having been taught to share in their kindergarten class, the three young children decided a trichotomy of their bug collection would be the fairest way to divide the creatures for the summer. Definition: division into three parts
