Dr. Gary Stewardson, Raymond Boyles Safety Practice Working with electricity can be fun. To keep it fun, we will continue to use the safety practices we learned in an earlier lesson. In this section we are going to be working with series circuits. 2

Dr. Gary Stewardson, Raymond Boyles Introduction of Circuit Types Since we have learned how to wire a simple circuit, we are now ready to explore complex circuits. The first complex circuit we will discuss is known as a series circuit. 3

Dr. Gary Stewardson, Raymond Boyles Series Circuits Components of an electrical circuit can be connected in many different ways. The way components are connected determines the type of circuit. One way components can be connected in a circuit is in series. We call this a series circuit. 4

Dr. Gary Stewardson, Raymond Boyles Series Circuits In the simple circuit we only had one light bulb. By connecting more light bulbs or other devices in series with the one light bulb, our simple circuit becomes a series circuit. 5 Simple Circuit Series Circuit -- +

Dr. Gary Stewardson, Raymond Boyles Series Circuits A series circuit exists when all the components are connected in-line, and electricity must flow through each component on its way from the positive (+) to the negative (-) terminal of the power source. 6 -- +

Dr. Gary Stewardson, Raymond Boyles Series Circuits If one of the light bulbs is burnt out or disconnected, the electricity will no longer flow because there is an electrical open in the circuit, similar to when the switch is in the open or off position. 7 -- + Open

Dr. Gary Stewardson, Raymond Boyles Laboratory Activity 8 Now that we covered series circuits, let’s complete Activity 6 and the performance objective. You will need your workbook to complete the performance objective.
