Investigation 1 Part 1 Day 2

Focus Question Our focus question is still the same. Write a line under what you wrote in your t-chart yesterday and add your “before” thoughts using you new knowledge from the light bulb experiment! Focus Question: What is needed to light a bulb? My thoughts and ideas before the lesson My thoughts and ideas after the lesson Think About: What do we need energy for? What does energy do?

System and Electricity Yesterday, you made a system Write the following definition of a system in your notebook: A system is an organized group of related objects that forms a whole. The wires, D-Cell, and lightbulb are part of the system. Tell your neighbor the definition of system in your own words

System and Electricity Read the paragraph and use what you know of systems to fill in the blanks: Electricity moves the stored _______of the D-Cell to the ___________. The light produced by the bulb moves the _________of the bulb system out into the environment around the bulb/D-Cell system. But the lightbulb system produced light only when the parts were ___________just right.

System and Electricity Read the paragraph and use what you know of systems to fill in the blanks: Electricity moves the stored energy of the D-Cell to the lightbulb. The light produced by the bulb moves the energy of the bulb system out into the environment around the bulb/D-Cell system. But the lightbulb system produced light only when the parts were connected just right.

“Lighting Bulbs” Half Sheet Glue “Lighting Bulbs” half sheet into notebook With your group use your D-Cell/Bulb systems and look at the six D-Cell/Bulb systems and determine which arrangements will light the bulb Write “will light” or “will not light” in the small box Cold call (Answers: Investigation Guide p.77)

Energy Distribute “Circuit Note Sheet”, glue in notebook & fill in blanks. After each point, draw a simple sketch representing the concept. The flow of electricity through the wires is called electric current. Where there is a current, there is energy. A circuit is the pathway where the electric current flows from the D-cell to the lightbulb and back to the cell. The circuit must form a complete pathway from one end of the D-cell back to the other end for the electricity to flow. Each individual item in the circuit is called a component. Electric current transfers and moves the energy from component to component. This system has four components. The D-cell, bulb, and two wires.

The Bulb Filament The part of the bulb that produces light is the filament When electricity goes through the filament, the filament gets so hot that it glows. The glowing filament gives off light, so light is evidence of energy.

Distribute “Inside an Incandescent Bulb” Glue in notebook Closely observe the diagram with your neighbor. What are two things you notice? Cold call

Return to the Focus Question Fill in the second side of the T-chart Back to Back, Face to Face protocol Focus Question: What is needed to light a bulb My thoughts and ideas before the lesson My thoughts and ideas after the lesson Think About: What do we need energy for? What does energy do?
