PHYSICAL ACTIVITY HELPS… PHYSICAL WELL BEING Related to your heart, lungs and body systems growing strong and healthy Your body shape improves (looking good= feeling good) MENTAL WELL BEING Learn how to cope with stress, and difficult situations Learning to control emotions The chance to feel emotions and experiences SOCIAL WELL BEING Learn social or group behaviour to fit in. Sport teaches you confidence, co-operation, communication and teamwork. You meet people.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE CHARACTERISTICS? Healthy Active Lifestyle No Smoking Diet (Energy Balance) Limited/ No Alcohol No drugs (Sport related no performance enhancing drugs e.g.. blood doping/ Steroids) Active (According to age/ability and gender)

BENEFITS Try to write a list of all the benefits to leading a healthy active lifestyle a reduced risk of developing a life-threatening disease a greater likelihood of maintaining or reaching a healthy weight a greater sense of well-being improved sleep and increased day-time vitality, less stress Information from: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Pensionsandretirementplanning/Over50HealthAndWellBeing/Healthandfitness/DG_10026833 RECAP SLIDE

UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLE Inactivity, poor diet and bad lifestyle choices puts you at greater risk of: heart disease some cancers diabetes osteoporosis, leading to fractures (half the number of hip fractures could be avoided with regular physical activity) obesity and related health problems Information from: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Pensionsandretirementplanning/Over50HealthAndWellBeing/Healthandfitness/DG_10026833 RECAP SLIDE

ENERGY BALANCE.

ACTIVITY LEVELS There is no reason to give up a sport or exercise you enjoy just because you are getting older. Think back to participation how could age have positive and negative effects on taking part in sport? Information from: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Pensionsandretirementplanning/Over50HealthAndWellBeing/Healthandfitness/DG_10026833 ADULTS should aim to do at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five or more times a week YOUNG PEOPLE should aim to do at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity five or more times a week People in their 80’s or 90’s, regular, gentle exercise can help retain muscle strength and improve mobility. Through daily activity you can retain mobility and flexibility. MAKE SURE YOU WRITE THIS DOWN!!

What are the effects? What impact do they have on participation and performance? What are the effects? What impact do they have on participation and performance?

AGE

GENDER

DISABILITY

If you are overweight, your heart and lungs have to work harder to supply oxygen to your body. Too much fat makes it more difficult for your lungs to work properly. Losing weight through diet and exercise will make breathing easier. http://www.lunguk.org/you-and-your-lungs/living-with-a-lung-condition/healthy-eating-and-your-lungs.htm The highest risk was among people who were both obese and smoked more than ten cigarettes a day – they were five times more likely to die early than non-smokers of a healthy weight. The risk of being overweight as a teenager increased the risk of dying Being seriously underweight also increased the risk of dying early http://teensunderground.com/article.asp?articleid=46143&Teenage-obesity-is-as-bad-for-health- as-smoking-research-

ALCOHOL Classed as a ‘Depressant’. Depressants have an opposite effect to stimulants. Slow the bodies reactions down, make people lethargic and effect co-ordination. Causes damage to: Liver Kidneys Central Nervous System Cardio Vascular Respiratory System Reproductive System Slows reaction time Co-ordination Although calming effect = banned in archery, shooting

SMOKING Cigarettes Classed as a ‘STIMULANT’. Stimulants: stimulate the circulatory and nervous system. Increase heart and blood pressure Speed up reactions Other well know stimulants are Caffeine (natural stimulant), and Amphetamines e.g.. ‘speed’. REMEMBER THE EFFECTS OF SMOKING ON YOUR LUNGS/ HEART. THE IMPACT ON THIS IN LEADING A HEALTHY ACTIVE LIFESTYLE…

Cancer (due to tar on the lungs) Coronary Heart Disease (due to increased heart rate and blood pressure – also bad for physical performance) Emphysema (due to damage of alveoli) Addictive qualities due to Nicotine affect the brain Carbon monoxide = less oxygen gets to muscles Pain and fatigue after the bodies warning signals. Overheating leading to heat stroke A ‘down’ feeling when effects wear off Violent and aggressive behaviour Heavy use can cause high blood pressure, liver, and brain damage.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS Focus on : Blood doping and Steroids You should know… What are they How to they aid performance Why are they banned / what are the side effects? http://admin.moguling.com/Upload/baseballblog247.com/steroi ds.jpg

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS When training at altitude the body responds to the lack of O2 by producing more red blood cells Blood is taken from an athlete after training at altitude then infused back in at sea level before the competition. “If athletes are using their own blood – how is this cheating”? Discuss What are the effects? Increase muscle strength, power, aggression, high BP, water retention What harm does it cause? Aggression Infertility Cancer Heart problems

BLOOD DOPING- EXPLAINED IN PICTURE! SEA LEVEL HIGH ALTITUDE Athlete has an event they are training for. At normal level they have an average amount of red blood cells to carry O2 The athlete trains at high altitude. Naturally this increases the amount of red blood cells produced so they body can carry more oxygen. Whilst at altitude blood with a high concentrate of red blood cells is removed from the athlete and stored. Just before the race day this is then injected back into the athlete to increase the number of red blood cells and allow them to carry more oxygen which aids performance by increasing endurance. It is legal for an athlete to be well organised and plan to train at altitude in preparation for events and to increase endurance to allow more training to take place!
