1 This year the Land and Poverty Conference is glad to welcome poster session presenters. Poster session presenters are asked to provide their own posters for the Conference due to limited ability of the conference organizers to provide printing services. The size requirements for posters are as follows: Size A1 vertical: 841 x 594 mm (height x width) or 33.1 x 23.4 inches (height x width) Please consult the following formatting template when preparing your poster. Information on the poster session date and time, as well as instructions for mounting posters in display area provided are forthcoming.

2 Introduction Materials and methods Results Conclusions Literature cited. Acknowledgements. Data outlook: Transnational biofuel deals Biofuel deals account for more than 10% of all LSLAs with 3.7 million hectares (ha) under contract Project implementation Despite of a large number of projects in operation, biofuel deals are also more likely to fail after having been implemented: 16% of the projects get abandoned in contrast to 1% and 2% of mixed and other deals respectively The implementation gap, as difference between the size under contract and the area under production, is for biofuel projects significantly smaller than for other deals (pure: 15%, mixed 37%, other 47%). Large-Scale Land Acquisitions for Biofuel Production. Together with ‘mixed’ deals, the share of biofuel deals is almost 20% of the total number of deals concluded Pure Biofuel deals are more likely to fail (18%) than mixed (6%) and other deals (5%) TOP 5 Target Countries Brazil is the top target country by hectares for biofuel deals Africa is the dominant target region for both, pure biofuel and mixed deals Indonesia‘s land is one of the top targets for biofuel and mixed deals TOP 5 Investor Countries European investors are dominating the TOP 5 of pure biofuel deals Asia is an important player in particular for mixed deals with biofuel and other deals South Africa is the only African investor within the TOP10 investor countries Note: All data as of February 19, 2014; no data available on concluded deals for the years 2002 and 2003 De facto, biofuel investment plays an important role within the LSLA pheno- menon but its real magnitude remains uncertain LSLAs for biofuels strongly picked up in 2005 – kindled by worldwide biofuel policy making A clear trend is visible: After 2005, there was a sharp increase in land deals being concluded Less deals concluded after 2010, interest in biofuel/mixed deals abates But: Few(er) incidences in recent years might be caused by a time lag in the availability of information Introduction In the last decade, biofuels became a big talking point in academics, for governments and inter- national organisations as well as the public Biofuels serve as a vehicle that can address different needs at the same time; for instance: Industrialised countries: reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a ‘renewable energy’ source, decreased dependency on fossil fuels Developing countries: introduction of a new industry promoting exports and rural development, improvements for energy security, comparative advantage due to favourable climate and the abundance of arable land Current Debates Large-Scale Land Acquisitions (LSLA) as a result of a growing interest in biofuels? ‘Food vs. fuel’ - more volatile and rising food prices as a consequence of biofuels? GHG emissions from biofuel production larger than the GHG savings from their use? Insufficient and/or imprecise data on the scope and impact of the phenomenon Methodology Intention of investment: Biofuel ‘pure deals’: biofuel production as the single purpose of investment ‘mixed deals’: multiple investment intentions including biofuel production ‘other deals’: investments excluding biofuels Data retrieved from the Land Matrix, an initiative that… promotes transparency and open data in decision-making over land investment records intended, concluded or failed land acquisitions for agricultural production, timber extraction, carbon trading, industry, renewable energy production, conservation, and tourism (in low- and middle-income countries) Sources for data collection Global network, research papers, policy reports, official government records, company websites, media reports, personal information and user’s contribution (crowdsourcing tool) ‘pure’ biofuel deals‘mixed’ deals incl. biofuel‘other’ deals Number of deals Intended size Size under contract Number of deals Intended size Size under contract Number of deals Intended size Size under contract (in MM ha) Concluded deals988.63.7885.34.175144.927.8 Intended deals391.6 n.a.121.8 n.a.13210.8 n.a.
