The Toxic London Fog Raj Patel 2-10-14

Introduction December 5th, 1952-December 9th,1952 About 4,000 killed Caused by the overuse of coal fireplaces from the unusual cold weather The air quality was negatively affected to where it caused thousands of deaths As the soot mixed in the air settled it also affected the water quality

Intro. Continued It threatened the human life in the area and the animal life (fish, birds etc.) It affected the weather, the temperature and the water habitats as well This is likely to happen again if England doesn’t keep the air regulation high and limit the use of coal fireplaces

Human Aspect The use of coal in fireplaces is the main influence that caused this disaster This lead to the British Clean Air Act of 1956 This was a prohibition of having dark smoke come out of chimneys and to have less smoke from chimneys all together It also put a height limit for chimneys

Human Aspect Cont. They also had a restriction on transportation emissions I would recommend having them to switch to another heat source instead of coal, which some have done, but still have chimneys.

Summary The human reaction to the cold weather lead to the overuse of coal in fireplaces This caused the toxic soot to mix with the fog causing deadly air This lead to thousands of deaths and the creation of the British Clean Air Act of 1956
