1 Notes-Solving multistep equations 5(x +9) – 3(x – 8) = 35

2 Example 1 5(x +9) – 3(x – 8) = 35 Get rid of parentheses using the distributive property. Do keep change change for all subtraction. 5(x+9) + -3(x + -8) =35 5x + 45 + -3x + 24 = 35 Combine like terms on the same side of the equal sign. 2x +69= 35 Now solve as usual - 69 -69 2x = -34 2 2 x = -17

3 Example 2 -4(x - 3) + 2(x - 4) = 2 + 4 Keep change change -4(x + -3) + 2(x + -4) = 2 + 4 Get rid of ( ) -4x + 12 + 2x + -8 = 2 + 4 Combine Like terms on each side of = sign. -2x + 4= 6 Now solve -4 -4 -2x = 2 -2 x = -1

4 Try this one- 2(m + 3) – 4(3m-8) = - 2 Remember-Keep Change Change Get rid of ( ) by doing the distributive property. Combine like terms on each side of = sign. Solve as usual 2(m + 3) + -4(3m + -8) = -2 2m + 6 + -12m + 32 = -2 -10m + 38 = -2 -38 -10m = -40 -10 m = 4 Great Job!
