6 6/2003 TJ 6 Statistics Finnish version has 1536 preferred terms and 1490 non-preferred terms 129 translation mismatches ( 8,3 %) which corresponds to the ISO standard default value; strict criteria For about 63 % of the Finnish preferred terms in ELSST a corresponding YSA term was found (also Swedish terms from Allärs) New term suggestions for ELSST about 95

8 6/2003 TJ 8 Challenges (2) Ethnic groups: terms in ELSST not relevant for all countries. Pensions: hierarchy varies from country to country, in Finnish context some terms are ambiguous –’private personal pensions’ - in F. voluntary personal pensions. Education systems, occupations

9 6/2003 TJ 9 Suggestions Education: we suggest International Standard Classification of Education ISCED 1997 (by Unesco) as the basis Occupations: we suggest International Standard Classification of Occupations (for European Union purposes), ISCO88 COM

10 6/2003 TJ 10 Working methods Aim at correlated thesaurus Exact equivalence of terms sought for If possible, equivalence with terms from Finnish national thesaurus (YSA) Extended use of non-preferred terms Enquiries for any unclear terms Use of translation scope notes, also translated to English

11 6/2003 TJ 11 Examples ’Disadvantaged groups’ - ’vähäosaiset’ people who have little of anything ’wildlife protection’ combined terms: Kasviston suojelu (protection of flora) Eläimistön suojelu (protection of fauna). ’Inner cities’ - concept not familiar, translated with a paraphrase. Terms with the word ’drugs’ - different terms for prescribed medicine and other drugs
