ISA 8 lessons prep (+notes for homework), section 1 exam, collecting results, analysing results (and section 2 prep), section 2 exam

Preparation I will give you a general area of chemistry we are investigating, YOU need to generate your own hypothesis.

You need to investigate a factor that affects the volume of acid needed to neutralise an alkali. You will need to produce your own hypothesis and research a plan.

What do I need to think about for a plan?

Research Wouldn’t it be helpful if I just told you all of these things for your real hypothesis? I can’t BUT you can research the hypothesis and use textbooks and the internet to help you come up with a method and think about your plan.

What to search for? Titration GCSE Neutralisation experiment GCSE

Things I found:

Which resource was better?

Planning tips Hypothesis: a statement that can either be proved correct or wrong IV: what I am changing DV: what I’m measuring Controls: Things to make it a fair test and with what equipment I will control them Why are control variables important?

Control variables Imagine I am trying to lose weight…. - I change white bread and pasta to wholemeal - I start taking a herbal remedy for weight loss - I drink 2 litres of water per day - I fidget all the time when sitting down I lose weight – hooray! Which one is responsible for my weight loss?????

Control variables These make sure that I only change one thing at a time, so that when I collect my results, I know for sure which thing has caused the effect that I have seen. I.e. my results are valid because I have carried out a fair test.

What would your results table look like? Independent variable (what we’re changing) (units) Dependent variable (what we’re measuring) (units) Remember : only ever put your units at the top of the table, do NOT list them down the column

Safety You can present this as a table or as a paragraph, however, you must ensure you include the following: 1.The equipment or chemical that carries the risk 2.What risk does it pose? 3.What you are doing to minimise the risk? 4.How do you know it’s dangerous? 5.What do you do if the worst happens?

Always include at least 3 risks Glassware Water Chemicals (liquid) - irritant Electricity Dropping hazards Tripping hazards - cables Chemicals (powder) – inhalation

Why would I want to investigate this? This is what we call our real-life context. Who cares about neutralisation?

Your real hypothesis and why you think this:

With the rest of this lesson….. Use each other to brainstorm a method, agree on your IV and DV. Decide what the risks are. Draw a results table. Look through textbooks to find relevant material.

For homework tonight Complete your ‘candidate research notes’ You will also need to find a second resource to compare against the one you found in class.
