2 Name? Named for the river the Flows through the centre. Possibly came from an old Finnic Language Word first mentioned in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoruki calling upon the prince of the Novgorod republic to come to “Moscow”

3 City Formation Originally just a small fishing/agriculture centre Wasn’t till 1156 that Yuri Dolgoruki ordered a wall to be built around the city Had to be built multiple times as the population continued to grow. Moved the capital to Moscow from Lev.

4 Mongols Mongols invaded the city burning it to the ground and killing the inhabitants in 1237. Was under Tarter control for over 200 years, till in 1480 when Ivan III finally managed to throw off the Mongol rule. The Tartars tried to reclaim the city in 1571 burning the city to the ground for the second time. Leaving only the Kremlin

5 Other Troubles Polish-Lithuanian forces tried to conquer the city but were pushed back a year later in 1612. Turned out to be a bad year, followed by the Salt riot, as well as the copper Riot. 40 years later a plague struck the city killing half of its population. In 1654-1656

6 1700’s Peter the great moved the Capital to St. Petersburg in 1712 to give Russia Access to the Sea. During this time the population of Moscow declined slightly and the economy suffered. Was a period of much intellectual property however, many poets and writers

7 Moscow and the modern world Napoleon tried to invade Russia in 1812 but meet major set back when the Muscovites burned Moscow to the ground. The third time the city was burned Hitler met the same opposition when he tried to invade in the 1940’s It was also thanks to the Russian Winter along with sporadic Russian attacks, that these two were defeated. Moscow was burnt in all five times.

8 Population Started as a fishing/ agricultural village, but as it became the capital the population rose dramatically. The wall surrounding the city had to be rebuilt several times as a result of this. The City’s been burnt to the ground 5 times in Total. 3 times killing large portions of the population, not to mention the plague of 1654-6 which killed half of the population Current population: 10,426,424

9 Arts and Science Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov, a Russian peasants who rose through the ranks to become one of Russias most notable scientist, poets, and artist. Among his discoveries: Venesus atmosphere, Continetal Drift (predicting the existence of Antartica), and many others. Alexander Pushkin, a very famous Russian poet involved in several scandals etc. Has famous and large street named after him in Moscow. Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy, a writer who brought the Russian literary world to the west. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a famous Russian composer that composed such classics as the Nutcracker and Swan lake.
