eLearning in the Languages Classroom

Why eLearning? Increased engagement Ability to learn at own pace, revise or extend Choice of activities promotes independent learning A wealth of learning activities available Opportunities for authentic language use

BYOD One device per person – necessary for independent learning. Schools can channel funds into other areas such as staff PD Students can access their class notes, homework Challenges Cost will challenge some families Different devices have different functions – teachers won’t know how they all work Benefits

What can students use their devices for in languages classrooms? Here are some ideas from HGHS students.HGHS students

Websites / apps for class use. Socrative is an app for android or apple which can be used with any internet capable device. Let’s try it. If you can’t scan the QR code go to m.socrative.com m.socrative.com If you sign up for Socrative you will be given a virtual classroom or “room number”. Mine is 644614. Please enter the number and join the room. Choose a team – yellow, red, blue or green

The teacher can make up a quiz on the spot. You can make up true / false, muti choice or short answers. Or you can use a prewritten quiz. This is easily done by typing your questions and possible answers into the template provided in an excel spreadsheet.

While the quiz is taking place you can see the responses live. When the quiz is complete, you can have a breakdown of the responses sent to you by email.

www.quizlet.com Flashcards that you can import from word lists and customise yourself, or find sets that others have made. Students can practice the vocab, play games and take a test when ready. The test can be customised also and it is graded automatically. You can also print flashcards from here.

Interactive Power point You can turn power points into games or quizzes by creating hyperlinks from an object or text on the page to another slide. Weather and Days Speaking Activity Colours Practice

1) Create a “master” question slide. Which of these is すし ? Which of these is すし ?

2) Create a “wrong answer” slide. いいえ、 ちがいます。 もう一ど がんばって 下さい。 いいえ、 ちがいます。 もう一ど がんばって 下さい。

3 ) Create a “right answer” slide. はい、そう です。 はい、そう です。

4) Go back to your “master” question slide. Click on the wrong pictures and go to “insert” “action” in the menu. Which of these is すし ? Which of these is すし ?

Don’t forget to click “OK” This means if anyone clicks on the picture when playing the slide show, it will take them to the next slide.

5 ) Still on your “master” question slide, click on the right picture and go back to “insert” “action” in the menu. Which of these is すし ? Which of these is すし ?

This time choose the slide that has the “correct answer” by selecting it from the drop down menus. By using the action settings, you can link to any slide in your presentation from any slide.

Finally, use action buttons to go backwards and forwards between slides. You can find these at the bottom of the “insert” “shapes” menus. These buttons will take you back one slide or forward one slide. You need to add these to the “answer” slides so the person viewing the slide will know where to go next.

いいえ、 ちがいます。 もう一ど がんばって 下さい。 いいえ、 ちがいます。 もう一ど がんばって 下さい。

You can then copy and paste the three slides as many times as you want, and change the questions / potential answers. Hint – it’s best to make everything behave as a wrong answer, then copy lots of times and change the correct one as you write the question.

More on action buttons… The other action buttons have various functions. The last one can be customised – you can write in it and an “action button” menu will pop up automatically for you to choose what will happen if someone clicks on it. き CLICK ME
