PERIODIZATION: Understanding what preceded this “postclassical era” To understand continuity and change over time you must have long view of history; in this case from a world perspective. 1 st wave civilizations 6000 B.C.E. – 600 B.C.E. Identify those areas where the earliest civilizations developed.

COMMON CHARACTERISTICS AMONG 1 ST WAVE CIVILIZATIONS Division between agrarian and pastoral societies Development of social hierarchies (patriarchy) Establishment of early belief systems (polytheistic) Migration and settlement in areas near rivers Early development of trade networks Are these the beginning of continuities or the precursor to inevitable changes?

5. TRANSITION FROM “1 ST WAVE” RIVER VALLEY CIVILIZATIONS TO THE CLASSICAL PERIOD From a world perspective, what observations can you make about the classical period? What changed between the 1 st wave and classical period? Why? What remained a continuity? Why? 600 B.C.E. – 600 C.E.

EXAMINING CCOT BY REGION The class will be broken up into 9 groups and assigned a region: Central Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa, Americas, Pacific Oceania For each region you will create one slide that includes the following: - Relevant image(s) - Explanation of continuity and change over time *Remember that this includes an explanation of why - Brief timeline of key events - List of significant figures and civilizations from this period
