1 Note: Glacier is launched unpowered and hardmounted in EXPRESS Rack 6 on Flight ULF2. For the following three weeks after activation or transfer, two 2-hour command/downlink windows per week are required preferably on Monday and Thursday at 9am CST. After one month of on-orbit ops, one window a week preferably on Thursday is required. The ULF2 unit should be activated approximately 2 weeks prior to the first sample insertion. Currently, there are no sample insertions until the transfer of returning items from MELFI to Glacier (DCB-15A-PRE SMP XFR). Cold Stowage will submit a comment if samples are to be inserted into Glacier prior to this transfer. PD must command to disable/enable the cold volume fan around any door openings for the ULF2 unit to limit ice buildup. 15A unit software will alleviate requirement for PD commanding to fan during door openings. Health & Status (H&S) data (1 Hz) is downlinked via PL MDM. As long as the Glacier ground team can receive H&S data, crew is not required to perform additional status checks after activation. If no Ku-band coverage can be obtained in a 24-hour period, two checks separated by 8-12 hours are required for that day. Power interruptions must be limited to 30 minutes when samples are inside Glacier to prevent degradation of scientific results. Historical photos/video are required of crew working at the Glacier for each unit transferred to ISS. Prior to the 15A software load, all crew interface with Glacier will be via the front panel. 2 Note: Two dry cycles are noted in URC, but Glacier continues drying from initial command after activation to cool down. At least 24 hours are required for Glacier to dry. Glacier team will check humidity during the second command window and initiate cool down when the unit is dry. For planning purposes, cool down can start at the beginning of the second command window. Glacier requires at least 24 hours to cool and fully stabilize. Prior to rack powerdown, the Glacier team will command shutdown followed by PRO commanding to disable power, comm, and water. The PRO has authority to command Glacier power off/on when the Glacier ground team is not available. After rack powerup, PRO will command to enable power, comm, and water. No additional ground commanding from the Glacier team is required for powerup. Apply a 1:1 ratio for cool down duration, e.g., two hours of cool down for a two-hour power off event. PD must command to disable/enable the cold volume fan around any door openings for the ULF2 unit to limit ice buildup. 15A unit software will alleviate requirement for PD commanding to fan during door openings. Transfer prep only required if no other sample transfer activities to/from Glacier are planned prior to return. For most stages, returning items in MELFI are transferred to Glacier just prior to Shuttle docking. GLACIER-DSC CAN-RPLC Crew replaces desiccant canister. Only required after one year of on- board ops. GLACIER-FILTER-CLEAN Crew cleans inlet filter on the back panel. Only required when AAA used as primary heat rejection for 90 continuous days. GLACIER-SMPL-REMOVE Crew removes sample from Glacier. GLACIER-PD-CMD PD commands to disable/enable Glacier fan around door opening. ULF2 unit only.
