Referencing Why do it??

Referencing….  Including material from books, journals, web sites, etc in an assignment without referencing is called plagiarism, and is regarded as a serious offence at colleges and universities.

Referencing…  Examples of plagiarism include:  Not using “…” if you have copied words directly from somewhere else  Cutting and pasting material from different sources without acknowledging the sources  Not listing all sources used in a bibliography.

Referencing… Avoiding plagiarism  Make note of all items that you refer to when researching an assignment (author / title / date / publisher / web addresses, etc).  If you’re using Infotrac or the e-books, use the How to cite facility.  Use your Bookbag on the library catalogue to keep track of what you’ve borrowed in the past.  http://voyager.westcoast.wa.edu.au/ http://voyager.westcoast.wa.edu.au/

Referencing… APA Referencing  This is the style of referencing used by West Coast TAFE, and ECU.  Other Colleges and universities use different systems, such as Harvard Referencing.  We have two reference guides (one published by us, one published by ECU) for sale in the bookshop.  The ECU reference guide is also available on-line at: http://www.ecu.edu.au/LDS/pdf/refguide.pdf http://www.ecu.edu.au/LDS/pdf/refguide.pdf  The Publication manual of the American Psychological Association is also available on Reference in the LRC.

Referencing… In-Text Referencing Direct quote: According to Clarke (2005) “it is a normal part of education to make presentations to explain your analysis of a topic.” (p. 149). OR “It is a normal part of education to make presentations to explain your analysis of a topic.” (Clarke, 2005, p. 149). OR paraphrasing: One method of demonstrating your analysis and understanding of a topic is by giving a presentation. (Clarke, 2005).

Referencing… Bibliography/Reference List These two terms can be used interchangeably, but a Bibliography is usually defined as a listing of relevant items, while a Reference List is a listing of items that you’ve actually referred to as part of your assignment. Items are listed in a Bibliography or a Reference List alphabetically by the author (or by title, if there is no author).
