6. Time Outs Who can request a Time Out? Two Types of Authorized Conferences 1. Inside the numbers, one coach and eleven players only. (3 attendants) 2. Outside the numbers, must be in front of team box. Multiple coaches and players. 8. Head Coach Conference Rule 3-5-11 A time out must be requested by a player or head coach. The coach may ask the referee review a decision which was made on the previous play. Conference will be held in front of the team box in the field of play. Referee will be accompanied by another official and only discuss with the head coach. If rule applied incorrectly, the time out becomes an official’s time out and Referee will review and explain situation to opposing coach. 9. Injured Player Signal to stop the clock Ask for the medical / training staff to attend the player; or send the player out using good judgment. Do not administer aid or touch the player – let the pros do it. The referee will cover the injury, you have sideline responsibility. Player must stay out one play if you stopped the clock. Time out does not have an effect on whether the player sits out a play. AHSAA State Camp August 2011

10. Bloody Player Rule 3-5-10 The player may return when the bleeding is stopped, the wound is covered, the uniform and/or body is appropriately cleaned, and/or the uniform is changed. AHSAA State Camp August 2011

11. Line to Gain / Measurements Linesman Grasp chain and clip. Instruct down marker operator to mark front stake spot and keep same down number. Bring chain to Line Judge’s foot. (back edge of yard line) Hold firmly and call “ready”. Wait for referee’s decision and signal. No first down- Hold chain, go to sideline and reset. Have box man move indicator to the next down. If new series, let the chain go and set up for a first down. AHSAA State Camp August 2011

12. Line to Gain/ Measurements Line Judge Align linesman with ball so measurement is accurate. (Give them a foot) Important: Do not trust your chain crew no matter how experienced, how many Super 6’s they have worked, camps they have taught, etc…. 13. Reporting Fouls to Referee Identify foul (Holding) Identify offending team by jersey color and Offense / Defense or kicking/rec. (Red, offense) Identify number or position (66 and or right guard) Indicated spot of the foul, end of run or end of kick. (spot of the foul was the 45 – at the flag) Indicate status of the ball when foul occurred. (the offense was in possession) Share the information with crew; especially the other wing official. 14.  Crew responsibility. Everyone goes down together if a penalty is enforced incorrectly.  Better know what was called.  Linesman- Be ready to have line-to-gain equipment moved AFTER penalty administration.  Line Judge – Hold enforcement spot (yard line). 15. Reporting Fouls to the Coach Always done with RESPECT Addressed as Coach or Sir Relay the facts, Provide good information. No opinions or threats. If you can answer a question…answer it. If you don’t know, try to find out. AHSAA State Camp August 2011

17.  Record down, distance, yard line nearest to foremost point of ball  Linesman communicate with Referee  Announce down and distance to chain crew.  Pick up Clip and hold so it doesn’t fall off.  Reverse yardage chain and two chainmen.  Set down marker after referee has spotted the ball  Confirm correct, give referee the fist or fingers. 18. Between Quarters Line Judge should write down, distance and yard line. Go to the corresponding yard line (not spot) while remaining within five yards of the sideline. Make sure ball is spotted correctly. Assume responsibilities as you would for a time out. AHSAA State Camp August 2011

20.  Take action if teams use one entrance/exit to leave field  Time the half so you will know the clock situation at all times  Do not discuss game (really anything)with strangers in the officials room.  Check progressive fouls (sideline, unsportsmanlike) with crew.  Observe score board making sure clock is correct.  Observe warm-ups, but don’t put yourself in a position to be worked by a coach. 21. After the scoring play What are we looking for? Unsportsmanlike acts by the scoring team. Personal Fouls or Unsportsmanlike acts by the defensive team. We don’t stop officiating after a score. Keep the action boxed in. Encourage the players to go back to their huddle and to celebrate with their team. AHSAA State Camp August 2011

22. Timing Be aware of timing. If you stop the clock for a time out, look to see if the clock actually stops. Check the clock when possible. Think about situations when the clock may be a factor. We do not wind the clock to start it (with the exception of kick-offs). We only stop it Referees make mistakes sometimes, check with them. If you make a mistake, tell the referee. 23. Over Time Procedure Toss winner shall choose whether to be on offense, or defense or choose the end of field at which ball will be put in play. One time out per series. This is important and needs to be confirmed with head coach. “Coach, each team will have one time out per series” Linesman remind box man he is the only guy that has the line of scrimmage. Be slow and careful. Game card is very important as it can get confusing in multiple overtimes. AHSAA State Camp August 2011
