3 The Constitution Act, 1982: 35: (1) The existing aboriginal and treaty rights of the aboriginal peoples of Canada are hereby recognized and affirmed. (2) In this Act, “aboriginal peoples of Canada” incudes the Indian, Inuit and Metis peoples of Canada. 1)Think2) Pair3) Share Question: Does this make sense to you that the Metis can be considered both a “new nation” and one of “the aboriginal peoples of Canada”? *** this is not a “do you agree question” this is a “does this make sense question”.

4 Question: “What makes a people a nation” 1)Think: Individually think about this questions and come up with 5 attribute of a nation 2)Share your 5 attributes in your group (I will assign you a group) 3)Discuss all of your ideas and come up with the 5 most important attributes of a nation. 4)In a group you will create a poster that pictorially represents the 5 attributes 5)Present to the class Nation Activity

6  How do these 5 attributes apply to Canada?  Is Canada a “nation” or a collection of nations?  Video- does this describe Canada as a nation?  What do you think of the fact that in November of 2006, the House of Commons passed a motion to “recognize that the Quebecois form a nation within a united Canada”?  Why did they recognize them?  Should we recognize any others? Discussion

7 Discuss in writing, whether you think Canada is or is not a “nation”, and say why not. Make specific reference to attributes of nationhood. Writing Assignment
