5 Lesson 13 – More Discourses 13:1-9 Parable Of The Barren Fig Tree vv. 6-9 A man expecting figs from a tree found none He has tolerated this for 3 years vv. 6-7 He orders the tree cut down The vinedresser convinces him to wait 1 more year…if no fruit, then cut it down vv. 8-9

11 Lesson 13 – More Healing 13:10-17 Jesus humiliated, shamed the Jews in this “exchange” v. 17a The people, however, rejoiced over these glorious things Jesus was doing v. 17b

12 Lesson 13 – 2 More Parables 13:18-21 Given the reaction of the people to the previous events, it seems Jesus felt the need again to reinforce the nature of the kingdom and how it would grow He did this by telling 2 short parables…ones He had previously told in Galilee cp. Mt 13

13 Lesson 13 – 2 More Parables 13:18-21 Parable Of The Mustard Seed vv. 18-19 The kingdom would not start “large” but small It would eventually become large Parable Of The Leaven vv. 20-21 The kingdom would not work openly, but “secretly” through one heart at a time

14 Lesson 13 – General Teaching 13:22-35 Passing through villages, Jesus continued to teach “…on His way to Jerusalem” v. 22 He was asked re: the “few” to be saved v. 23 He replied men should “strive” to enter the narrow door v. 24 “agonizomai” (agonize)

15 Lesson 13 – General Teaching 13:22-35 Many will seek this way, but will not be able to find it vv. 24-27 cp. Mt 7:13-14, 21-23 He likens this to being “locked out” of a house with one they felt they had a relationship “There will be weeping & gnashing of teeth” vv. 28-30

16 Lesson 13 – General Teaching 13:22-35 The Pharisees “advise” Jesus vv. 31-33 He needed to leave Herod’s jurisdiction for His own personal safety Jesus told them to tell that “fox” He would not leave until His work was completed “Prophets must not die outside Jerusalem”

17 Lesson 13 – General Teaching 13:22-35 Jesus laments over Jerusalem vv. 34-35 He was deeply saddened the city had not come to Him as He had hoped v. 34 The city would suffer the consequences of her rejection Ù “desolation” (destruction) “Coming in the name of the Lord” = judgment

18 Lesson 13 – General Teaching 13:22-35 Jesus laments over Jerusalem vv. 34-35 These were all references to A.D. 70 and the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans God had removed His glory from Jerusalem centuries earlier cp. Ezek 10 The city would suffer again in rejecting Jesus
