The Devastating Domino Effect

Statistics  Harvard study (Fat Talk, Harvard University Press) published in 2000 revealed that 86% of teenage girls are on a diet or believe they should be on one.  In a study after being introduced to western television shows in Fiji the eating disorders in girls on the island rose from 3% to 15%. A surprising follow-up study reported 74% of Fijian girls feeling “too fat or big” and 62% had dieted in the last month—surprising in a culture that typically upholds curvaceous women as beautiful.

Statistics  In its 1998 study Focus on Youth, the Canadian Council on Social Development reports that while the number of boys who say they "have confidence in themselves" remains relatively stable through adolescence, the numbers for girls drop steadily from 72 per cent in Grade Six students to only 55 per cent in Grade Ten.

Statistics  Studies have found that nearly half of females ages 6-8 [involved in the study] have stated that they want to be slimmer.  The average fashion model today is 5’10” or 5’11” and weighs 120 to 125 pounds. That means they have a body mass index of about 17.4. Anything under 18.5 is considered underweight and unhealthy

Barbie Effect  The fact is that were an average woman to mirror the proportions of a Barbie doll, she would need to grow 17 inches in height and have a body shape found in less than one in 100,000 women.  She [would be] about six feet tall with a 39" bust, 18" waist, and 33" hips.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/galia- slayen/the-scary-reality-of-a-re_b_845239.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/galia- slayen/the-scary-reality-of-a-re_b_845239.html
