8 th grade lab science procedures Mrs. Brandt

Over Procedures – Take Notes 1.Lighting a Bunsen Burner A.Steps: 1)Close both air and gas valves 2)Open gas 1 turn and air ¼ of the way 3)Turn gas on (handle aligned with nozzle, 90 degrees = OFF) 4)Light with flint striker close to top of burner 5)Adjust oxygen valve to get blue flame B.NEVER LEAVE A LIT BURNER UNATTENDED! C.Hottest Part of a flame…just above inner blue flame

Bunsen Burner – Good Flame

2.Heating Substances in a test tube A.With test tube clamps 1)Move back and forth above flame so it does not heat too fast 2)Point away from others B.In a water bath 1)Draw and label set-up 2)Heat gently (ring above the flame!)

3.Using a thermometer A.NEVER shake it down B.NEVER stir with it C.For temp of liquids in a beaker, hold it in the middle of the liquid 4.Testing for odor A.Waft – draw the odor to you with your hand

5.Measuring volumes of liquids (in Liters) A.Use a graduated cylinder or pipet with bulb (NOT a beaker) B.Read at eye level C.Read from the bottom of the meniscus 6.Transferring liquids A.Lip to lip is the safest way for most liquids B.Acids 1)Pour down a stirring rod 2)Do as you “oughta” add acid to water

7.Measuring Solids A.To find mass (in grams) use a Balance. 1)Always carry balance by base. 2)Zero balance before use by Setting all sliding weights to zero Adjusting knob at end 3)Always use weighing paper, no chemicals directly on balance. 4)Unknown goes on the left side. 5)http://www.ohaus.com/input/tutorials/tbb/TBBins.htmlhttp://www.ohaus.com/input/tutorials/tbb/TBBins.html B.To find weight (in Newtons) use a Spring Scale. 1)Balance by adjusting scale with nothing on it to zero

8.Transferring Solids A.From container use a chemical spatula. 1)Don’t use the same spatula for different chemicals 2)Never put extra chemical back in container B.From weighing paper 1) Pour down the fold… 9.Turning on the sinks A.Nothing glass under them when you turn them on! B.Turn on slowly!

10.Set up A.Goggles/Glasses first B.Then Aprons if needed C.Then get Trays/Materials D.Always use your own number for goggles/glasses/aprons, and tray of materials corresponding to your lab station number

11.Clean up A.Turn everything off B.Dispose of chemicals as directed C.Wash all equipment and put back on trays like you found it D.Wipe down your table E.Wash hands F.Put away goggles
