3. Objectives By the end of this session you should be able to identify: – The key components in networking Servers Clients Other hardware

4. Network Hosts Servers provide services to the network – They all require a NOS – Some require additional services or applications Print Server manages the print queue for one or more shared printers on the network Mail servers have additional software e.g. Exchange and protocols e.g. SMTP/POP3 to send and receive email

5. File servers control access to shared data Web servers host web content e.g. IIS Proxy servers secure web access and improve internet performance e.g. ISA server

6. Clients Clients can also be known as Workstations Clients can include desktops, laptops, mobile devices and thin clients Thick clients must run a network operating system like windows 7 or 8, apple or android Thin clients will use remote desktop or Citrix Clients will utilise shared network data and resources over a common protocol e.g. TCP/IP Clients will connect via wired or wireless media

7. NICs Every networked device will require a NIC Each NIC will need a set of updated drivers The Mac address on the NIC uniquely identifies that card on the network

8. Printers Print devices will be installed on print servers and shared for use by the clients Clients will need printer drivers for the print device and a mapped path to its location
