3 Friend of the poor Even though it was dangerous, Romero continued to speak out against injustice. In 1980, Romero was killed while saying Mass. Romero is remembered for his courage, his faith and his love for the poor.

4 What is a saint? Romero was a special man. When he was killed, many people called him a saint or a martyr.

5 Romero is now recognised by the Pope as a martyr. On 23 May, Romero will be declared ‘Blessed’ – this is called beatification. Beatification is a step towards being declared a saint. Beatification

6 After Romero’s death, there was a civil war in El Salvador. Many people were killed. Civil war

7 In 1992, the civil war ended. The people of El Salvador are working hard to rebuild communities and make a better future. El Salvador today
