2 What We Already Know Slavery sucked They weren’t paid Forced to work Worked sunrise to sunset Might be beaten Many tried to escape

3 What We Already Know Life expectancy- less then 40 years Crime to teach a slave to read They weren’t allowed to vote. They weren’t allowed to have family. They would sell them away from each other.

4 What We Already Know Slavery existed in the South but not the North Sectionalism-North and South were very different North had large cities, New York, Milwaukee South- Rural cities, New Orleans, Atlanta, Charleston. North had Industries South had small businesses

5 What We Already Know Slavery issue settled by 3/5 compromise. Slaves counted as 60% of a person. Procrastinated on Slavery, They knew something was going to happen. We didn’t have funds to fight a war. We were trying to get away from Britain. We were too weak of a country to solve slavery.

6 What We Already Know America is growing to the west, we are adding states Each state gets 2 senators

8 The Missouri Compromise Missouri comes in as a Slave state. Maine enters as a Free state 36’30” slave to the south freedom to the north

9 The Abolitionists An abolitionist was someone who wanted to totally get rid of slavery. Frederick DouglassJohn BrownWilliam Lloyd Garrison “The Librerator”

10 -Compromise of 1850- California is admitted as a free state No more slave trading in the area around Washington D.C. Southwestern territories got to pick whether or not they are going to be a slave state or a free state (popular sovereign) THE FUGATIVE SLAVE LAW!!!!!!!!!

12 Uncle Tom’s Cabin A novel that includes graphic details about the abuse of slaves by a master named Simon Legree Harriet Beecher Stowe

13 The caning of Charles Sumner A northern senator is nearly beaten to death by a southern congress man.

14 John Brown’s Raid John Brown who was an abolitionist tries to start a national slave revolt, but fails. During his trial and execution he becomes a hero to the north and a villain to the south.

15 Kansas Nebraska Act Popular Sovereignty; Kansas and Nebraska would vote whether to be free or slave

16 Lincoln Douglas Debates US Senate debates Douglas supported the Kansas Nebraska Act. Lincoln supported stopping slavery from spreading The entire nation read transcripts of their 7 debates. These made Abe Lincoln famous.

18 Dred Scott Decision The supreme court ruled that African Americans could not attain the rights of a citizen.

19 Birth of the Republican Party The Republican Party was started in Ripon, Wisconsin and was dedicated to stopping the spread of slavery.

20 Election of 1860 Lincoln wins a split vote between 4 candidates. South Carolina votes to secede. Secession: to “drop out” Firing on Fort Sumter begins the war!!!!!
