1 Competitive Speech Competitive Speech is an extra-curricular activity which gives MHS students opportunities to compete in high school speech tournaments in the Dallas area. Tournaments are generally held on selected Fridays and Saturdays from November through December. The state level competition continues into March. All students in grade 9-12, in good academic standing, are eligible to participate.

3 Events to perform in Cross-Examination Debate Lincoln-Douglas Debate Prose Reading Poetry Reading Original Oratory Extemporaneous Speaking Impromptu Speaking Solo Acting/Monologue Duet Acting

4 Cross-Examination Debate Cross-Examination debate is a policy debate in which you install a plan of solvency to a direct problem. You compete against teams of 2 people Extensive research is required for this debate, most provided by MHS A fast exchange of facts, statistic, persuasion, and a small amount of philosophy

5 Lincoln-Douglas Debate LD debate is a slower speaking debate that incorporates value theories, philosophy and some statistics on a morally based topic. This is a one on one debate. Not much research is required, however you must gain a good grasp of the topic as well as some philosophical ideals.

6 Prose & Poetry Reading This is also called oral interpretation. For Poetry, the performer memorizes a 7-9 minute poem or collection of poems. For Prose, the performer memorizes a 7-9 minute story. Both of these events involve acting skills to put the words you speak into motion.

7 Extemporaneous Speaking Exempt involves knowledge & research of current event topics. You are given 3 topics, you choose one topic out of the three. You are then given 30 minutes to browse through current event topics and develop a 4-7 minute speech, which you will perform.

8 Original Oratory Original Oratory is a 8-10 minute persuasive speech that you write, memorize, & perform. Topics are persuasive in nature to try and help some specific part of mankind. Examples: families who communicate more, organ donation/blood donation to help fellow man, not using sarcasm.

9 Solo Acting/Monologue/Duet Acting These are Acting events. Both are 8-10 minute memorized pieces Duets involve two actors performing a dramatic or humorous piece.
