What is Temperance?  Temperance is the exercising of moderation and self-restraint.

Reasons for Reform  The temperance movement was started by Evangelical Protestants.  People during this time thought that alcohol was the root of all criminal activity.  Excess of alcohol, especially in small western towns.  The average male back then drank 3 times as much as the average today.  Women were very strong supporters because they said alcohol caused many of the problems with their husbands.  Many saw this as a way to overcome their own problems with alcoholism.

Key Figures/Dates  1825 Lyman Beecher, a Connecticut Minister, had started lecturing his fellow citizens against the consumption of liquor.  1826- American Society for the Promotion of Temperance became prominent.  1840- 6 reform alcoholics in Baltimore organized the Washington Temperance Society.

Methods of Reform  By this time more than 1 million people has signed a formal pledge to forgo hard liquor  Some temperance advocates had urged that abstinence include not only hard liquor but beer and wine too. Not everyone agreed with this and it caused a split in the movement. Some began demanding State Legislation to restrict sales and consumption of alcohol Maine passed a similar law in 1851 Some thought it was more up to the individual to decide this stuff There was some tension between protestants and Catholic immigrants because alcohol is an important social ritual and is an integral part of the life of their community

Related to 2 nd Great Awakening  Lyman Beecher was a prominent figure in the Temperance Movement as well as the 2 nd Great Awakening  This reform was sparked during the 2 nd great awakening and was caused by many of the things that came out of it.

Does this relate to the Future?  You see kind of thing come back and happen in 1920 when the Prohibition happened. This outlawed all sale, manufacturing and transportation of alcohol until 1933 when it was repealed.  People don’t worry about it as much today although there are still people out there that are strongly against anything to do with alcohol.
