Water Recourses in the Tucson Basin Arizona Department of Environmental Quality H2O Is it safe?

Raytheon and Curtland Airforce Base use of paint thinners with Tri Chloral Ethylene (TCE) which causes cancer, and Tri Chloral Athane (TCA) which is another form of a paint thinner This contaminated the ground water, and is now moving north towards campus and the center of Tucson First clean up process did not work but made the problem actually worse. Background

Sucked the TCE fumes into pipes and deliver it to air strippers and carbon filters. TCE sticks to the carbon and is disposed of Water is filtered back into the ground EPA and the State of Arizona

Cleaning process was not designed to clean both TCE and TCA TCA was being pumped back into the groundwater Larger contaminated area

States and Companies to clean up contaminated areas around Tucson. Ex: Dry Cleaners contaminated some areas with Perchloroethylene (PCE) What are we doing about it? The city is trying to remove PCE from the water by sucking PCE vapors from the dirt and above the water and running it through carbon filters that catch the PCE So far we have captured three tons of PCE from the water

Around the U of A there are wells that are in place specifically to check the water and make sure it’s safe for drinking. Ex: the well outside the Recreation Center
