15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 1 IT Developments TRIS 1 – TRIS 1 / TRIS 2 Item 7.1 on the agenda 1 TRIS = TRansport Information System

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 2 Summary  TRIS  What is TRIS? – A reminder  TRIS 1  What is TRIS 1?  Status of TRIS 1  TRIS 2  What is TRIS 2?  EUROSTAT Strategy – A Reminder  Status of TRIS 2  Coverage of TRIS 2 Migrating from.csv /.ges to SDMX-ML TRIS and SDMX

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 3 TRIS  What is TRIS? TRIS is an Information System Framework  What is TRIS doing? It implements & integrates the today’s Transport IT systems as sub-systems:  The legal transport modes’ data collections (Aviation, Inland Waterways, Maritime, Rail, Road Freight)  The voluntary data collections (Regional, Common Questionnaire)  Indicators (newly developed from an EXCEL desktop application)

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 4 TRIS  How is the data management of the TRIS sub- systems executed? Data Management of the TRIS sub-systems are sub- contracted and are executed as follows:  From the premises of the sub-contractor outside EUROSTAT for those transport systems processing non-confidential statistical data in the standard IT environment (Aviation, Inland Waterways, RegWeb, WebCoq)  From the secured data rooms inside EUROSTAT for those transport systems processing confidential statistical data in the secured IT environment (Maritime, Rail and Road Freight)

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 5 TRIS 1  What is TRIS 1?  Implement / integrate / harmonise / document the today’s Transport IT systems with only minor changes in the TRIS sub-systems  Enable the Transport IT systems to interface with the Directorate B developed IT/IS systems and services, use its components and building blocks  Enable developing the transport information systems towards VISION compliance

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 6 Status of TRIS 1  AVIATION  1 st prototype in the EUROSTAT standard IT environment  In 2 nd phase of large scale testing in the TRIS development environment  RAIL  1 st prototype in the EUROSTAT secured IT environment  In 1 st phase of large scale testing in the TRIS development environment  IWW  In 1 st phase of large scale testing in the TRIS standard development environment  ROAD Freight  In 1 st phase of large scale testing in the TRIS secured development environment

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 7 Status of TRIS 1  MARITIME  In 1 st phase of large scale testing in the TRIS standard development environment  REGWEB (Regional Questionnaire)  Ready to start large scale testing in the TRIS standard development environment  WEBCOQ (Common Questionnaire)  Implementation in the TRIS Framework under development  INDICATORS  Ready for production  SDMX-ML implementation  TRIS 1 converts arriving SDMX-ML data files in.csv  TRIS 1 implements the.csv format as a pivot format in its internal workflow

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 8 TRIS 2  What is TRIS 2?  Firstly, it will implement & integrate as TRIS 2 sub- systems also the future Transport IT systems like:  Aviation air emissions (an extension of the Aviation transport mode TRIS sub-system integrating statistical data with other data sources)  Road traffic (first as voluntary data collection later as a legal data collection)  Transport Safety (as a voluntary data collection by and from the transport safety agencies)

10-11 December 2009 CGST 9 EUROSTAT Strategy  Extract of the “COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND THE COUNCIL on the production method of EU statistics: a vision for the next decade”  New forms of communicating with users and producers such as web 2.0, as well as other new developments in information technology, are likely to result in profound changes in communication channels and data handling and storage. Eurostat’s compilation of data originating from NSIs is already becoming increasingly interactive through subsequent iterations of data deliveries and validation, by which the quality of the statistics is being improved. These factors will have to be reflected in both dissemination and production processes. Moreover, as a result of these developments the production of statistics has become more integrated, not just in the economy but in society as a whole. The development, production and dissemination of official statistics have thus to be adapted to the conditions of the “knowledge society”.

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 10 TRIS 2  What is the objective of TRIS 2?  Implement a cooperative validation environment with Member Countries in the standard and secured IT environments in EUROSTAT  Enable the Transport IT systems to interface with the new Directorate B developed IT/IS systems, services, components, tools and building blocks converging to and complying with the VISION  With TRIS 2 (and future versions of TRIS) continue implementing the VISION as of the availability of the items here before

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 11 TRIS 1 & TRIS 2  TRIS is implemented in the EUROSTAT standard and secured IT environments  2 legal transport modes (Aviation, Inland Waterways), 2 voluntary data collections (Regional, Common Questionnaire) and Indicators are implemented under TRIS in the standard EUROSTAT IT environment  3 legal transport modes (Maritime, Rail, Road Freight) are implemented under TRIS in the secured EUROSTAT IT environment  TRIS has an IS architecture based on the state of the art n-tier thin client / server model

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 12 TRIS 1 / 2 Architecture TRIS Information System Architecture based on the n-Tier Thin Client/Server Model Web Server Thin Client typically a Web-Browser like MS Internet Explorer on a PC ECAS Server Application Server Database Server PC Client launching a request to the Web Server If the Web Server cannot satisfy the request from the PC Client it is becoming itself a Client launching a request to the Application Server If the Application Server cannot satisfy the request from the Web Server, it is becoming itself a Client launching a request to another Application Server or to the Database or to the Authentication Servers EBB Server TRIS 1 EBB 2007 TRIS 2 EBB 2010 BO Server (TRIS 1) eDAMIS Web Server eDAMIS Application Server + eVE (TRIS 2)

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 13

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 14 Status of TRIS 2  TRIS 2 Pre-analysis / Feasibility Study 2009  Study available in 01/2010  TRIS 2 Pre-analysis / Feasibility Study more particularly and detailed on validations 2010  First draft of study available on 15/12/2010  TRIS 2 development to start in 2011 based on this Study

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 15 Coverage of TRIS 2  Coverage of the 2010 TRIS 2 Pre-analysis / Feasibility Study more particularly and detailed on validations 2010  Integration with SDMX SDMX-ML: TRIS 2 converts arriving.csv and.ges formatted data files in SDMX-ML SDMX metadata: the processing of Country Specific Notes

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 16 Coverage of TRIS 2  TRIS 2 implements the SDMX-ML format as a pivot format in its internal workflow except for ROAD Freight data because of volume & performance issues with the today’s available compact SDMX-ML format  1 st level validations under eDAMIS with DSDs, eVE and WebForms (Regional Questionnaire) - if the arriving data file is in SDMX-ML  1 st level validations under TRIS 2 either with the eDAMIS/eVE modules or with EBB 2010  2 nd & 3 rd level validations under TRIS 2 with EBB 2010  1 st & 2 nd level validation reports returned to data providers eDAMIS backchannel reporting Acess to TRIS from NSIs

15-16 December 2010 CGST Meeting 17 Coverage of TRIS 2  Analysing available and new extended network architectures in cooperation with VIP SICON on the access for researchers from NSI safe centres to the EUROSTAT safe centre  Analysing data confidentiality issues in validation reports of NSIs’ 1 st and 2 nd level validations No or limited values to be included in the reports Reported errors must mostly be related to the record numbers + record key identifier in the MSs input dataset received via eDAMIS Access to more detailed reports
