1 Go through this presentation.
Uses of enzymes Go through this presentation. Use the information and that from the textbook to then help you complete the crossword puzzle.

2 Making use of enzymes Some microbes produces enzymes that pass out of cells. These enzymes have many uses in the home and industry. What might be the role of enzymes which are used in biological detergents?

3 Enzymes in biological detergents help remove stains.
The enzymes are coated with a special wax that melts in the wash, releasing the enzymes. Once the stains have been broken down, they are easier for the detergent to remove. Proteases break down proteins in stains such as grass, blood and sweat. Lipases break down stains containing fat and oil.

4 Advantage of biological detergents
Biological detergents are more effective at low temperatures than other types of detergents. This means less energy is wasted heating water to higher temperatures.

5 Making baby food Proteases are used to predigest some baby foods.
New facts Making baby food Proteases are used to predigest some baby foods. How might predigesting baby food benefit a baby? Makes it easier for its digestive system to absorb amino acids etc

6 New facts Making glucose syrup Carbohydrases are used to convert starch into glucose syrup used in many foods. Starch glucose This is also the starting point for making ethanol from plants.

7 New facts Making fructose syrup Sometimes glucose syrup is then treated with isomerase enzyme to make fructose syrup. glucose fructose

8 New facts Making fructose syrup Glucose + fructose contain the same amount of energy, but fructose is much sweeter. How might this fact be exploited by food manufacturers? Smaller amounts of fructose are needed than glucose to sweeten foods. This means less calories are added which is great for slimming foods.

9 Advantages and disadvantages of enzymes
New facts Advantages and disadvantages of enzymes Advantages Work at low temperatures and pressures (saving energy and costs). Disadvantages Denatured by higher temperatures and extreme pH. Expensive to purify/produce.
