What’s New in Junior High Math? 2014/2015

TEKS The revised TEKS for kindergarten– grade 8 will be implemented in the 2014/2015 school year. The KISD unit plans for 2014/2015 have been aligned to the Revised TEKS.

STAAR – Performance Standards For the spring 2015 STAAR grades 3–8 mathematics test administrations: Students will receive a raw score* prior to the end of the school year New performance standards will be established then applied retroactively in the summer of 2015 * questions correct out of total questions

STAAR – Process Skills In the STAAR mathematics assessments for grades 3 – 8, there is not a separate reporting category for process skills. Instead, multiple process skills will be incorporated into test questions from the content reporting categories. When student expectations are reported for an administered test, an additional report will be provided listing the content student expectation and all applicable process student expectations.

STAAR – Graphing Technology For the spring 2015 STAAR, students taking the 8 th grade STAAR must have access to graphing technology. Students taking the 8 th grade STAAR will use the same technology (TINspire) as the students taking the Algebra 1 EOC. Note: Graphing technology is a tool that allows students to explore and make sense of the math. It is not appropriate for students to use this technology for every lesson or during every test.

DLAs for Math Grades 6, 7, 8 A set of 5 – 7, assessment items for each unit will be provided to campuses. Items will include multiple choice and griddable questions. At least one assessment item will be an open response question with scoring rubric. The scoring key will list the content student expectation and all applicable process student expectations. Coaches and teachers can use these questions as they plan their instruction and assessments. Campuses can use these questions to assess students progress during the unit or at the end of the unit.

Textbook Publisher: McGraw Hill Teachers will receive Teacher’s Edition and online Teacher’s Edition. Students will receive consumable textbook (2 volumes) and access to the online version of the textbook.
