2 Follow the same process as solving multi-step equations. Keep in mind that you want your equation to end up looking like: VARIABLE = NUMBER **It doesn’t really matter what side the variable goes on—most people are more comfortable with the variable on the LEFT side of the equation and the numbers on the RIGHT side.

3 Solve:7k – 4 = 5k + 8 There are no ()’s and no like terms to worry about. Let’s get the variables on the LEFT side. Subtract 5k. 7k – 4 = 5k + 8 -5k = -5k 2k – 4 = 8 Move the “-4” to the RIGHT side by adding. 2k – 4 = 8 +4 = +4 2k = 12 2 2 k = 6

4 Special Equations: Identities: When you solve an equation and the variables “cancel” and you are left with a TRUE numeric statement. (The equation will be true for ANY value you put in for the variable.) i.e.Solve 2x – 6 = 2(x – 3)

5 No Solution: When you solve an equation and the variables “cancel” but you are left with a FALSE numeric statement. (The equation will NEVER work for any value of the variable you choose.) i.e.Solve: 9 + 5n = 5n - 1
