2 Research from America’s Choice “The creation of a reading culture motivates students to read and works to increase students’ love of reading.” Goals: Motivate students to read more each year Build vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension Reinforce classroom learning experiences with publicly celebrated success Use the incentive to help drive mastery of important literacy skills Develop students’ confidence in their ability to apply all the skills involved in reading

3 How will we keep track of our reading; # of books, minutes, or pages?

4 100 minutes of reading per week Students will set personal goals

6 Reading goal recorded and adjusted on goal sheet. Use at-home reading log and independent reading log to keep track of completed books. 3 magazines, 3 picture books, 3 graphic novels, or any mix = 1 chapter book All reading recorded must be from a “just- right” text

7 Why is my child’s reading goal different than his classmate?

8 October Dress up as a book character.

9 January Pajamas and pillows for a “Read-in” event with friends!

10 March Bookies and Milk Book Swap with a sweet treat!

11 May To be announced….

12 Help your child at home by…. Providing a set time and comfy place for reading Partner read books with them, by page or by chapter Visiting the public library, Half-Priced books, or swapping with a friend Check out chapter books on CD at Haslet Library
