2. Existentialism Existentialism - The belief that individuals are free to make their own choices and that they change as they make choices. Existence precedes essence - Existentialists believe that a person starts off as a blank slate and that our essence comes later as a result of our own decisions. Existential angst - The feeling of anxiety, sadness, or dread that comes from the feeling of freedom that comes from existentialism.

Existentialists-MAJOR aUTHORS  Søren Kierkegaard  His work crosses the boundaries of philosophy, theology, psychology, literary criticism, devotional literature and fiction to question human existence  He is known as the “father of existentialism”  Friedrich Nietzsche  His attempt to expose the motives of Western religion and philosophy sent a clear and blunt message to theologians, philosophers, psychologists, and all modern thinkers.  His written critiques about human existence, religion, morality, modern culture, and science challenged and questioned the value and objectivity of truth and how life should be interpreted.  His views were based on life being meaningless without God but also said that God was dead

Existentialists-MAJOR aUTHORS-Continued  Jean-Paul Sartre  Wanted to understand human existence not the world  His ideas were that there were to states of being which were: the being of the object of consciousness and that of consciousness itself.  Albert Camus  didn’t consider himself an existentialist  He presents readers with dualisms such as happiness and sadness, dark and light, life and death, etc.

5. Existentialism-Franz kafka Franz kafka was borned july 3, 1883 in Prague, Czech Republic.His father was Hermann kafka and his mother was Julie kafka. He lived in the old town square in Parague; at this time it was known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From 1889 to 1893 Franz attended the German boys’ elementary school at the meat market. Kafka was jewish so when he turned 13 he did not have to attend school anymore. After leaving elementary school in 1893 He attended gymnasium in Kinaky palace.In 1901 Kafka attended charles university in prague. He started to began to study chemistry, but switched to law after two weeks.He did not like the field of chemistry.

6. Existentialism-Franz kafka countied He change his course to being in law and history he passed with a bachelor degree. He was employed on November 1 1907 to an italian insurance. He was really unhappy with the work and the working hours. He would work to 8:00 to 18:00. so he wanted to be something way better then being in a insurance company. So he became an author; One o the stories he wrote in 1904 was named Description of a struggle. In 1912 wrote another story name The Judgment.All the stories he wrote was about Existentialism.Franz Kafka died by tuberculosis in June 3 1924 in Vienna

Absurdism ● Absurdism- the belief that humans exist in a purposeless, chaotic universe ● focuses on the denial of an existence of life purpose or value ● Earth is void of any religious, spiritual, or godly meaning ● life is pointless, and there are no goals and no reason to exist ● a search for meaning conflicts with an actual lack of meaning itself ● a search for order in the universe results in creating conflict with the universe ● one can accept this fact by rebelling against it and taking advantage of what life has to offer ● “In the end, each life is no more than the sum of contingent facts, a chronicle of chance intersections, of flukes, of random events that divulge nothing but their own lack of purpose.” - Paul Aster in The New York Trilogy

The Metamorphosis The original German title of The Metamorphosis was "Die Verwandlung" the Novella or Short Story was written During 1912 Originally Published in the german Language In 1915 By Kurt Wolff Verlag The Genre of the Metamorphosis is Absurdism The Metamorphosis Focuses on an individual’s existence, Freedom, and Choice The Metamorphosis is a form of existentialism because it is about a man that was devoted to his family and life and had no self-identity, only until he transforms into a Beetle, The theme of the book that Any given choice will define you for the rest of your liFe
