Gustave Courbet Courbet started and dominated the French movement toward realism. Courbet, against much opposition, truthfully portrayed ordinary places and people. Art critics and the public were accustomed to pretty pictures that made life look better than it was.

Edouard Manet Self-Portrait with a Palette

Manet is more concerned with how to paint rather than what to paint. He varied his application of color. Some was applied very carefully and other colors were dabbed on agressively. He influenced the Impressionists, but their representation of light and color were different. Manet never painted what could be called a truly Impressionist picture.

Edouard Manet. A Bar at the Folies-Bergère

Edouard Manet. The Absinthe Drinker

Edouard Manet. The Ham

Ilya Repin Repin is an example of how the French led others into styles of art. He was a Russian who traveled to France to study the masters and it was there that he was exposed to the Impressionist style. Repin did not join this style, but held strong to his realistic background.
