2 Definition of Irony A discrepancy or contrast between appearances or expectations and reality.

3 Verbal Irony Occurs when someone says one things but means something else.

4 Example of Verbal Irony Lisa missed her bus to school, dropped her textbook in a puddle of water, and had her cell phone stolen, all before 8:00 a.m. She said, “I’m have a wonderful day so far.”

5 Situational Irony Occurs when there is a discrepancy between what is expected to happen and what really happens.

6 Example of Situational Irony A soldier risks his life to get water and then spills all of it.

7 Dramatic Irony Occurs when a character in a play or story thinks one thing is true, but the audience or reader knows better.

8 Example of Dramatic Irony In the story, “The Cold Equation,” a young girl stows away on a spaceship thinking she will see her brother. The readers, however, know she must die.

9 Conclusion Careful readers can spot irony.
