Retrieve a chart off of the table, glue it to page ____ in your compbook, and answer question #1 IN YOUR NOTES Read over the chart- which advancement do you think had the greatest impact on Europe? Explain why! Advancements made in the Renaissance Math Some Renaissance scientist thought mathematics could help them understand the universe. They studied ancient math text and built on the ideas. They created many symbols such as square root Science Advances in mathematics led to advances in other fields of science. Engineers and architects, for example, used new mathematical formulas to design ways to strengthen buildings. Other scientist wanted to know more about the sky and what was in it. They studied astronomy. They learned that the earth revolves around the sun! Cartography Cartography is map making. During the Renaissance, papermaking came from China and so did print! This allowed the maps to be more accurate. Education Students continued to study religious subjects, but they learned about humanities as well. History was also becoming very important.

The Renaissance Men 7.48 Outline the advances made in literature, the arts, science, mathematics, cartography, engineering, and the understanding of human anatomy and astronomy, including Leonardo da Vinci (Last Supper, Mona Lisa), Michelangelo (Sistine Chapel, The David), Johann Gutenberg, and William Shakespeare.

What new styles of art developed? ❖ Renaissance artists aimed to show what people really looked like and revealed people’s feelings. Artists studied the human body to learn how to draw it accurately ❖ Renaissance painters also used new methods that brought life, color, and action to their works. Artists used light, shadow, and perspective to carefully recreate the human form. ❖ Perspective - the way of showing people and things as they appear at different distances. ❖ How does this relate to the ideals of Humanism? ❖ Importance is put on the unique features of humans

Raphael Sanzio

Donatello

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci 1452-1519  Italian painter, draftsman, sculptor, architect, and engineer whose genius, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. Perfected the use of perspective.  His Last Supper and Mona Lisa are among the most widely popular and influential paintings of the Renaissance.  He did not see a divide between science and art. His observations and inventions were recorded in 13,000 pages of notes and drawings, including designs for flying machines, plant studies, war machinery, anatomy and architecture.

❖ Considered to be the first medical illustrator

 The Vitruvian Man  Diagram dividing the human body proportionately.  Showed the relationship between the human body and geometry

Mona Lisa Turn to you table partners and… ❖ Make 2-3 observations about the Mona Lisa ❖ Why do think this is such a well-known painting?

 Make 2-3 observations about the painting  What elements of Renaissance art can you see?  The Last Supper, 1495 -1489, Milan

Michelangelo Buonarotti

Michelangelo 1465-1564 ❖ Sculptor, painter and architect widely considered to be one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance period—and arguably of all time. ❖ In 1508, Pope Julius II hired Michelangelo to work at the Vatican-the palace of the pope in Rome

 1508 - 1512  Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel

Michelangelo was the chief architect to design St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, 1537-50, built according to Michelangelo’s plans

Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love And I'll no longer be a Capulet” Can you spot any humanistic ideas in Shakespeare’s writing?

Who am I? Riddle 1. Create a 3 line riddle about one of the four Renaissance men OR one of their works 2.
