6. II. Meet the Author: William Golding A.Sir William Golding was a British writer best known for his first novel Lord of the Flies. B.William Golding joined the Royal Navy in 1940. He participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. C.In September 1953, Golding sent a manuscript to Faber & Faber of London. Initially rejected by a reader there, Golding was asked to make various cuts. It was published in September 1954 as Lord of the Flies. D.“Lord of the Flies” is a literal English translation of Beelzebub, a demonic figure that is often considered synonymous with Satan.

7. III. Background: A.Allegory = A literary work in which all or most of the characters, settings, and events stand for something else. The purpose is usually to teach the reader a lesson. B.Makes many allusions to classical literature, mythology, and Christian symbolism. It has also been said that it is an allegory of World War II. C.The central theme is the conflict between civilization—to live by rules, peacefully and in harmony—and with the will to power. D.The book subtly indicates that it takes place in the midst of an unspecified nuclear war, perhaps implicitly relating the savagery of the children characters to the warfare of adults.

8. IV. Literary Element: Characterization  Characterization shows what a character is like and why they are like this.  The author uses the character’s words, appearance, actions, and thoughts to show the reader what the character is like.

9. Picture  Draw a full page picture of Ralph, Piggy, or Jack. Remember to use the physical description of the character. Underneath the picture, describe the character’s personality. Copy a quote from the book that shows the character is like this.

10. V. Respond How does the way the boys work together compare to your group worked together last class? 30 words.
