1 EXTRACTING INFORMATION FROM RESEARCH DOCUMENTS FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUMMARISING

2 AIMS: By the end of this session you will be able to: Become familiar with the process involved in selecting a research document Begin to extract the main points Produce your own notes from a set text

3 C1.2 – ASSESSMENT CRITERIA READ AND OBTAIN INFORMATION FROM AT LEAST ONE DOCUMENT READ RELEVANT MATERIAL ACCURATELY IDENTIFY THE MAIN POINTS USE THE INFORMATION TO SUIT THE PURPOSE

4 TASK: USING THE INTERNET, SELECT ONE RELEVANT DOCUMENT ON THE SUBJECT OF……….. HI-LIGHT THE MAIN POINTS IN YOUR OWN WORDS WRITE AT LEAST 6 BULLET POINTS ON THIS SUBJECT

5 REMEMBER Not everything you read on the subject you are writing about will be that useful. YOU NEED TO BE SELECTIVE! You need to understand what is being said to you whilst reading the document, if you find it difficult to interpret, it is not the document for you.

6 EXAMPLE Your research should cover at least 1 A4 sheet and provide information such as: Who is this person Early career detail Career hi-lights Bullet points should be at least 2 lines in length. Ignore any unnecessary facts or descriptions. Look at the key points about this person. Make some notes Check for accuracy with your spelling and use of punctuation.

7 MAIN POINTS To find the relevant information from material you are reading it is a good idea to highlight or underline the main points that carry the information. Pick out the main points in the following example:

8 EXAMPLE: Write Jane a note and tell her tomorrow’s meeting is cancelled but we’ll still need her report by 10am. Now pick out the key words

10 ACTIVITY TWO – pick out the main points The daily newspapers are engaged in a bitter sales battle. Some newspapers reduce their prices to try to sell more papers. Others give special offers on travel if you collect a set of tokens day by day. One even sometimes gives away free plants if you send away the tokens in the newspaper.
