3 What is a mask? What is a mask used for? Who wears masks? When and why are masks worn? How have you seen masks used before? What story can a mask tell?

4 African Masks are dramatic portraits of spirits, ancestors, and characters from stories. Each mask is created according to tradition and worn by a trained performer. Some African masks are worn as part of celebrations with costumed dancers, vibrant music, and stylized dance. These ceremonies are important social events for the whole community.

5 Functions of African Masks Initiation Funeral Hunting Storytelling

6 Initiation Chokwe Toma Initiation Mask: Worn by boys as they become old enough to be called a man. Usually part of a special ceremony. During initiation ceremonies, the masks represent an ancestor. The purpose is to be accepted into the tribe as a vital member. Lula

7 Funeral Funeral Mask: The Yoruba people of Nigeria believed Funeral Masks contained the spirit of the dead person. It was believed that the person wearing such masks would be able to speak to the dead.

8 Hunting Hunting Mask: The hunter mask is made to look dangerous because animals are afraid of hunters. Some hunter masks use real animal bones for teeth!

9 Storytelling Storytelling Mask: Worn to entertain and teach about culture and history.
