2 ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTIONS Identify site activities, products and services that may interact with migratory birds –Construction activities –D & D activities –Prescribed burning –Pesticide/herbicide application –Constructing power poles/transmission lines Interaction with migratory birds and associated habitat

3 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS Potential impacts resulting from the activities identified may include: –Loss of habitat –Bird stress –Uptake of contaminated vegetation or water

4 APPLICABLE REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) Endangered Species Act (ESA) CAA

5 OTHER REQUIREMENTS Migratory Bird Protection MOU between DOE and US Fish and Wildlife Service

6 ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVE AND TARGETS Example of an objective: Integrate migratory bird protection into site missions and activities Target may include: –Development of an attachment to the MOU by the end of calendar year 2003 –Development of an annual report of migratory bird conservation accomplishments

7 CHECKING AND CORRECTIVE ACTION Develop plans to rehabilitate areas impacted by wildfires Provide perch guards and other devices on power poles to mitigate bird electrocutions Develop education programs to stimulate public awareness of the importance of protecting migratory birds
