1 Character Section From Research to Writing

2 PURPOSE What are you accomplishing in this section? Explaining how your characters are affected by the history/culture/issue you discussed in your previous section.

3 Steps to Follow 1.Consult your thesis. --Determine what effect history has on character. 2.Consult novel. --Find examples to support effect from thesis. --Find direct quotations to support effect from thesis. 3. Consult your research. --Find information to support effect from thesis. --Determine paraphrases and direct quotations. 4. WRITE YOUR PAPER.

4 STEP ONE CONSULT YOUR THESIS: Which part will you focus on? A Raisin in the Sun, a play by Lorraine Hansberry, is a reflection of A (TAG) 1950’s America by showing how the racism and segregation of the time B (time period) C (aspects of time period) put strains on a poor African-American family. D (effect of those aspects)

5 STEP TWO CONSULT YOUR NOVEL TO FIND DETAILS TO SUPPORT EFFECT FROM THESIS. 1. Walter drinks heavily. 2.Gets angry with George. (Volcano quote p37) 3.Fights with Beneatha. (sacrifices quote p14) 4.Fights with Ruth. (who cares quote p65) 5.Considers taking deal from Lindner. (on knees qt p98) 6.Stops going to work. (drove to factory qt p77) BE SURE TO FIND BOTH DETAILS AND QUOTATIONS.

6 STEP THREE CONSULT YOUR RESEARCH: LOOK FOR INFO TO PARAPHRASE AND QUOTE. 1.Read research from two page packet. First page, bottom article. 2.Underline information to help support your point. 3.Mark a direct quotation you would use.

7 STEP FOUR BEGIN WRITING YOUR CHARACTER SECTION: 1.Topic sentence identifying character and effect. 2.Supporting details including quotations and paraphrases from novel and research. 3. Explain how those details support the point you made in your topic sentence. READ SAMPLE ON P3 OF PACKET

8 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Character section should be about 2 pages. About 1 page per character. You can do one paragraph for each character, but it may take you more. Use information from both novel and research. Include both paraphrases and quotations. Keep thesis in mind. Not a summary. How does your character exhibit the effect from your thesis?

9 YOUR TASK FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE PERIOD, YOUR WILL WORK ON YOUR CHARACTER SECTION.
