3 Workshop Purpose: To assist LCSA trainers in tailoring CCSAS training to meet the needs of their organization

4 Workshop Purpose: “…Learn how to precisely identify training needs, determine outcomes, gather and analyze information for the needs assessment, and prepare an action plan.

5 California DCSS Definition of Training Training is the process of employing a formal program of instructional methods and techniques through lesson plans, trainers, mentors, and/or instructional devices, for the purpose of developing the competencies that enrich and enhance the performance level of child support staff.

6 Tailoring CCSAS Training Workshop Subjects:  Precisely identify training needs.  Gather and analyze information.  Prepare an action plan.

7 Tailoring CCSAS Training Precisely identify training needs: -- What “should” the employees be doing? and -- What are the employees “currently” doing? The difference  “Performance Gap”  Is there a ‘Performance Gap’?

8 Tailoring CCSAS Training -- Exactly, what is the performance gap or problem? -- Is the problem worth pursing? -- Can fast ‘fixes’ resolve the problem?  Acquire an understanding of the ‘Gap’ or “Problem’ -- Is the ‘Problem’ a true “Training Issue?” Precisely identify training needs:

9 Tailoring CCSAS Training Step 1 – Identify problem or the challenge Step 2 – Determine how you are going to collect ‘data’.  What are the steps to doing a Training Needs Assessment? Step 4 – Develop solutions. Step 5 – Consider costs & benefits. Step 3 – Collect and analyze your data Step 6 – Communicate results to management. Precisely identify training needs:

10 Tailoring CCSAS Training  Agreed upon performance problem/gap  Bottom Line, you have:  Proposed training to solve performance problem/gap.  Measurements that determine success of training Precisely identify training needs:

11 Tailoring CCSAS Training Gather and analyze information Next Steps or Actions: Action Taken: Management and you: Have agreed to a performance gap/problem. Have agreed that “training” is needed. Review your ‘Training Needs Assessment’.

12 Tailoring CCSAS Training Gather and analyze information  Are there any “Prerequisites?”  Research for any existing training curriculum.  Review Policies & Procedures for current details.

13 Tailoring CCSAS Training Gather and analyze information  If “New” training curriculum must be developed, you will need to author:  Performance Problem statements  Course Objectives

14 Tailoring CCSAS Training Prepare an Action Plan  Decide what will be delivered.  Decide how it will be delivered.  Develop a training outline or plan.  Put together training material.  Prepare a training schedule & implement it.  Decide how to measure success.

15 Tailoring CCSAS Training What Now?? We have:  Identified the performance gap  Completed a needs assessment  Developed an Action Plan.

16 Tailoring CCSAS Training Answer: Maybe!Then, Maybe Not! You may need to run a ‘Pilot’ and Did the training eliminate the performance gap?

17 Tailoring CCSAS Training Conduct a “Pilot” or “Mock” Session  What is a “Pilot?”  Why do a “Pilot?”  Who attends a “Pilot?”  What is the objective of a “Pilot?”  What else should I remember about a “Pilot?”

18 Tailoring CCSAS Training Conduct Training Conduct Training:  Always remember how you felt when you were one of “them”  While conducting training, remember;  Psychological environment  Physical environment  Learner’s needs, interests, and values.

19 Tailoring CCSAS Training Evaluate your success:  Level 1 – Student evaluations (smile test)  Level 2 – Performance testing (hands on)  Level 3 – Has job performance improved?  Level 4 – Bottom line change (results)

20 Tailoring CCSAS Training Food for thought...  K.I.S.S.S.S. Kisss “Keep it simple, short, and satisfying s for the students.”  The 3 “Ts” of Teaching:  Tell them what you are going to tell them.  Tell them.  Tell them what you told them.
