3 Specific Heat Couple of Terms Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy associated with the disordered microscopic motion of atoms and molecules.

4 Specific Heat Couple of Terms: A calorie is a unit of measurement for energy.

5 Specific Heat The specific heat is the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise the temperature by one degree Celsius.

6 Specific Heat The relationship between heat and temperature change is usually expressed as: Q = cm  T where c is the specific heat m is the mass  T is the change in temperature and Q is the heat added

7 Specific Heat This relationship does not apply if a phase change is encountered, because the heat added or removed during a phase change does not change the temperature.
