Kingdoms and Domains Sec 18-3 “Ever changing Taxonomy”

The 6 Kingdom System  2 Kingdoms – Plantae and Animalia  3 Kingdoms – Plantae, Animalia and Protista  4 Kingdoms – Plantae, Animalia, Protista and Fungi  5 Kingdoms – Plantae, Animalia, Protista, Fungi and Monera  6 Kingdoms – Plantae, Animalia, Protista, Fungi, Eubacteria and Archaebacteria

The Three-Domain System  The domain is a more inclusive category than any other—larger than a kingdom.  Domain Bacteria – corresponds to the Kingdom Eubacteria  Domain Archaea – corresponds to the Kingdom Archaebacteria  Domain Eukarya – composed of the Kingdoms Plantae, Animalia, Fungi and Protista

The Big Picture

Domain/Kingdoms

Domain Bacteria  Members of the domain Bacteria are unicellular prokaryotes.  Their cells have thick, rigid cell walls that surround a cell membrane.  Their cell walls contain peptidoglycan.

Domain Bacteria

Domain Archaea  Members of the domain Archaea are unicellular prokaryotes.  They live in extreme environments  Their cell walls lack peptidoglycan.

Domain Archaea

Domain Eukarya  The domain Eukarya consists of organisms that have a nucleus.  This domain is organized into four kingdoms: – Protista – Fungi – Plantae – Animalia

Domain Eukarya

Protista

Fungi

Plantae

Animalia
