1 RELATIVE ADVERBS AND PRONOUNS What are they? How do I use them correctly?

2 Let’s start with a review…  Adverbs are words that describe verbs. They tell how, when, or where.  The boy ran effortlessly through the end zone.  Mom wrote the grocery list yesterday.  We went upstairs to finish our homework.

3 Review continued…  Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. They can be singular (1) or plural (more than 1). There are subject pronouns (in the subject) and object pronouns (in the predicate). 4 Now let’s learn about relative adverbs.  Relative adverbs are used after a noun to refer or relate to the noun, but they serve as an adverb. They are: where, when, and why  where – refers to place(s)  when – refers to date(s) or time(s)  why – refers to reason(s) or explanation(s) Let’s look at some examples.

June and July are months when the weather is hot. The reason why I am late is that my car ran out of gas. The reason why I picked you is that you are my friend.

6 Now let’s learn about relative pronouns.  Relative pronouns are used after a noun to refer or relate to the noun you are talking about. They are: which, that, who, whom, and whose.  which – refers to thing(s)  that – refers to a person or thing that is far from you  who – replaces subject pronouns (he, she, I, we, they, you)  whom – replaces object pronouns (him, her, me, us, them, you)  whose – replaces possessive pronouns Let’s look at some examples.
