3 Great Wall of Chu State The first part of the Great Wall was built by the Chu State in the year 656BC. The purpose of the wall was to help protect all they conquered in the Spring and Autumn Period, from intrusion of the Jin and Qi states. They built a series of walls along the northern frontier. The wall of the Chu was called “The Rectangle Wall”. During the Warring States Period, They extended the wall to help guard against attackers, especially the mighty Qin. The Wall was more integrated and solid, a formidable barrier.

4 Great Wall of Qi State The Qi also built a wall. They started in the middle of the Spring and Autumn Period and finished in the middle of the Warring States Period. The whole project lasted 300 years It was 600 kilometers (372 miles) long. Later called the famous wall of Qi. Wall was built to keep attackers out. It was one of the most influential military defenses in Chinese history. Complete with ramparts, passes, fortresses, and beacon towers, for a great military defense system. The wall stretched across almost all of the Shandong Province. Passing through 8 cities to reach the Yellow Sea.

5 Great Wall of Qin State The Wall of the Qin State was made to protect its land from the repeating invasions of the Wei State. Even though the Qin had a weak economy and suffered from civil strife, Kings Qin Ligong and Qin Jiangong made sure the wall was built. The Wall was west of the Yellow Sea. Another Wall was built to fortified the northwest frontier. The Yigu saw the Northern wall as a challenge, and tried to fight the walls construction but was totally defeated by the Qin and the construction continued.

6 Great Wall of Zhao State The Zhao built their wall in two sections. One section was built in the south in 333BC, to protect the land from the Wei and Stronger Qin. The whole section was 200 kilometers (124 miles) long. The other section was built in 300BC by king Zhao Wuling. The second wall protected the land from the invading Hu people. The king thought that the building of the second wall was the most peaceful way to go about the invader tribes, and states.

7 Great Wall of Zhongshan State The Zhongshan state built a wall in the southwest in the year 369BC, to protect them from the Zhao and Wei states. The Zhongshan used alliances to keep peace in the north and east, and used a wall to keep the peace in the south west. The wall was 250 kilometers (155 miles) long. It crossed the Taihangshan ands Hengshan mountains before stopping at the Hebei Province.

8 Great Wall of Wei State The Wei State built two walls. One in the north to protect the from the mighty Qin. The other in the south. The sites are now located in the Shaanix Province. It starts in the foot of Oinling in Huayin, and goes all the way to Inner Mongolia, ending in Guyang, Baotou. Both walls combined spanned 200 kilometers (124miles). The longest and best preserved part ran about 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles). It was 7.2 ft from 37.3 ft heigh. It had beacon towers that were 23ft to 36 ft tall.

9 Great Wall of Zhenghan State The wall of this state was started by the Zheng in the year 355BC. After Zheng was conquered by the Han State, the Han continued to build off of it. Some people called the wall the Zheng wall, others called it the Han wall, Hence the new name Zhenghan. This wall connected with the southeastern wall of Wei. It can be found in present day Xinzheng city.

10 Great Wall of Yan State The Yan State had two wall, the wall of Yishui and the wall of the North. The wall of Yishui was started in 334BC and finished in 311BC. It protected the Yan from the Zhao, Qi Qin. It was 250 Kilometers (155 miles) long. The wall of the North was started in 254BC, and was finished in the Warring States Period. It protected the Yan from nomadic Tribes like the Donghu.

11 Walls Built in the Warring States Period The warring states period last from 476BC-221BC. Battles occurred often during this period. This is when the “Seven Powers” of Qin, Qi, Chu, Han, Yan, Zhoa, and Wei started to make the boundaries of their territory. To help protect their land from other states and invaders they built walls. With conflict increasing the states continuously fortified and extended their walls.
