CSC/FAR 020, Computer Graphics, September 2, 2009 Dr. Dale E. Parson http://faculty.kutztown.edu/parson Outline for this class

Digital Media Play some MIDI guitar with software effects over top of some processed banjo samples that are looping and serving as ambient accompaniment. Talk about the digital world and how it is a description of an analog world that is analogous in some way to the physical world. We are exploring the boundary of sensory space and cyberspace.

The iMacs and the OSX Operating System Take attendance. Go over web links to first day handout. Everyone needs an account & networked storage access. Log onto the iMacs. Warn early and often about file storage. Only network folders or flash drives persist. Flash drives are $10/2Gbyte, $15/4G at bookstore.

OSX User Interface (UI) The Desktop The Menu Bar Applications do not die when you red-X them! The Dock Apple -> Dock Preferences Applications to run Applications that are already running Other stuff in the Dock Command-C, Command-V, conventions.

The Finder A.K.A. The Hider! Starting the Finder Different ways to View Folders and Files Action Icon or Right Click Get Info on files and folders. Applications folder – How to get at programs? TextEdit How to get at data – accessing networked folders and flash drives.

Some Quick File Manipulation Finders -> Applications -> TextEdit My name is First Last and this is my TextEdit file of September 2, 2009. Go back and forth to a browser. TextEdit -> Format -> Make Plain Text. TextEdit Save As FirstLastEdit.txt on the Desktop. Close file – TextEdit persists. Quit TextEdit.

Making and Zipping a Folder and Testing Networked Storage Make a Folder on Desktop called F. Use Return to rename it to FirstLastDay1. Move FirstLastEdit.txt into it. Go inside via Finder, Open & Close the file. Right-click -> Compress FirstLastDay1 Drag FirstLastDay1.zip to Student storage. Drag FirstLastDay1.zip to Parsons Inbox. Once these are verified, drag Desktop copies to the Trash can.

Assignment 1 Today is Practice. It is due 9/9. Next Tuesday uses Monday’s schedule!!!!!!! Command-Shift-4 lets you sweep a screenshot. PNG means Portable Network Graphics You will see many file types and extensions. We will discuss them later. Rename this to something intelligible. The folder where you store these files is always FirstLastProject, where “Project” is a project name. Applications -> Photo Booth lets you take a JPEG snapshot (extension.jpg or.jpeg).

Assignment 1 warm up Applications -> Adobe Bridge Compare to Finder Inspect Desktop, FirstLastDay1 Magnify image using loupe. Open from Bridge in Photoshop. Inspect Image -> Image Size. Physical versus Pixel Dimensions. Estimate file size. Why is it wrong?

Assignment 1 Additions Walk through the instructions. 10% requires effort beyond the spec. Paint bucket is one example. Spiral is another. Start with DaleParsonMid. Show Tools palette and Options palette. Shows History and Layers Windows. Control-J, Command-J duplicates a layer. Edit -> Transform -> Scale, 85% x 85%, rotate 45°. Make up your own! It’s worth 10% of Project 1.

Assignment 1, Finale Make sure to turn in by 11:59 PM 9/9/09. Make sure to back up your data. Save it to your networked Folder. Turn it in using my Inbox for your class. I advise saving a backup on a Flash Drive (thumb drive). Clean up your Desktop before logging out. Do not count on storage on a local iMac machine. We meet again on Tuesday the 8 th !!!
