DSL Services : Deployment and Economics The EgyNet Experience Ahmad Khaled Sallam asallam@egynet.com.eg Network Planning Manager EgyNet

Agenda EgyNet background. DSL-Network Design ATM core DSL Setup DSL-Network Cost Structure DSL Value Added Services FR over DSL Voice over DSL Issues with the unbundling IAD ’ s Targeted Markets. Provisioning Processes.

EgyNet Data Operator and Class A ISP, operational since March 2000. The first PDN in Egypt under private sector management. Started with 44 PoPs now 155 PoPs. 18,000 installed DSL-port. 3,500+ installed connections (FR, SDSL & ADSL) 12,000 dialup ports. Prime provider of connectivity and DSL services in Egypt. Major customers include: Corporate: National Bank of Egypt, Cairo Bank, Sales Tax Authority & Social Insurance. ISP ’ s: Internet Egypt, Misr Net, LinkDotNet & Soficom.

ATM core 25 Lucent CBX-500 Switches Redundant Power Supplies, Processors, redundant cards E3 Trunks. Alternative routes.

DSL Cost Structure Excluded 1.CPE 2.:ocal loop

ADSL users behavior ADSL users tend to use their connection almost 24 x 7

Splitters cost and ownership Voice Switch Copper Line Splitter Chassis Home Filter ATM Network Voice PSTN DSLAM The PTT is reluctant and/or slow to install splitter chassis. If DSL operator pays for splitter chassis, the the PTT looses control of the copper consequently the tel line. Various DSL operators will have various splitter frames. large hidden cost associated with installing the splitter chassis (cabling, space, support) ADSL modem

A Different Approach IAD ’ s are CPE ’ s with Ethernet and POTS interfaces. Computers connect to Ethernet and tel. Handsets connect to POTS interface Voice and data are carried over ATM. Data is carried to its destination over the ATM network Voice is carried over ATM to a Voice gateway that connect to the voice switch over a V5.2 interface. No extra cabling, no splitters Voice Switch Copper Line ATM Networ k Voice PSTN DSLAM IAD Voice G/W V5.2Ethernet POTS

FR over DSL FR-ATM Conversion performed inside CPE not CO switch. ATM VPI/VCI ’ s are converted to FR DLCI ’ s. Better cost / FR port. Allows for high density/density of FR deployment per CO. DSLAM Copper Line DSLAM 25 Core ATM Switches CPE FR5-FR8 CPE FR5-FR8 ATMFR V35 FR Router

EtherConnect Service L2 connectivity service with no IP component Meant to augment FR not to cannibalize it. DSL-router CPE with 4 Ethernet ports. Ideal for basic IP connectivity for ATM machines or small branches LAN EgyNet ATM/FR Stinger DSLAM Copper Local loop LAN Stinger DSLAM Copper Local loop 25 Core ATM Switches

Services Growth

Conceptual VPN Residential Business Volumes Connectivity Internet VPN Business DSL VPN Business DSL VPN Residential DSL Margins Business DSL VPN Residential DSL CONTENT ATM & DSL Infrastructure Best value when large volumes are associated with good margins. Residential services has to grow away from Internet (Int ’ l BW) The buzz word is CONTENT. Content includes: Gaming Video, Audio conferencing Voice over DSL. Media streaming. Local portals
